Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Layoff running totals based on Slack

Tracking participants count #general Slack channel in Oracle One workspace, as the fastest available proxy indication of ongoing layoffs.

  • nov01-nov30: 1614 layoffs, 1327 additions (based on Slack regular tracking)
  • oct01-oct29: 1950 layoffs, 1689 additions (based on Slack regular tracking)
  • sep02-sep30: 6275 layoffs, 861 additions (based on Slack regular tracking)
  • aug14-sep01: 733 layoffs (based on Slack very few data points)
  • aug01-aug14: ?2900 layoffs in IDC (based on media reports, no public info about other locations available)

Regions outside IDC and NA usually have a significant delay when laid off people are disconnected from Slack (e.g. 1 month in Pacific regions, perhaps longer in some EU countries), so this is a floor estimate with additions reflected immediately, but reductions lagging behind on average.

I will post daily in comments on the count change and running current month total while this post is still on the first page.

@td I check several times a day, and I see additions and subtractions as the day goes and I track both additions and subtractions. It's not ideal, as many additions and subtractions nullify each other between each take. So numbers are show are likely understate additions and subtractions happening at exactly same times. Still, it shows trends as additions are usually done in batches once or twice a day.

Forgive me if this has been asked and answered, but how can you tell how many added and how many removed? Removed is easy, just subtract the total number of participants from the previous day's/week's totals but how does one do additions at the same time?

Is there some view in Slack that will show that information?

@h1 - Why? Management gets the benefit of new talent at a reduced rate. O gets to reduce the payroll expense associated with the tech hiring hype of 3 years ago. New employees will be willing to endure more change over employee excuses of "that's not how we used to do it." O can entice new employees with options over a longer vesting period with a lower salary expense. The lower management layers will need to contend with an increased workload for leftover employees, constant employee turnover to meet performance kpi's, and re-training the new hires in the new culture they intend to promote. Employees would be wise to seek employment at a growing company or startup.

As an investor I am expecting to see O reduce its wide staffing in sales and professional services; with an emphasis on innovating tech and products people want to buy. The channel will do the selling and services. I am also planning for a few quarters of pain as they dress up the books and CM and MS start to turn the knobs to get to a leaner org. Yes, a lot of legacy knowledge has been shown the exit. Customers owning and maintaining older products should be planning for their migration.
