I wanted to take some time to come back here now that I am finally out of ToxxicMobil and provide some assurance to folks that are thinking in leaving but are not sure if life after XOM really exists. I am currently working for a big tech and oh boy ain’t I happy. I guess after many years working for this toxic company that I despise with all my guts now (literally toxic in all ways) I forgot how it really felt to be truly appreciated and heard by my colleagues and bosses. I had forgotten what I feels like to work in an environment where your hard work speaks for itself and there’s absolutely no need to spend time advertising BS ppts to others. I am not saying life now is perfect but it sure is a lot better than before. XOM has become a horrible horrible place to work and I honestly don’t think there’s any way out of it other than leaving it behind. Do a favor to yourself if you can and make the move. As long as you are able to leave this dying industry (I heard they are all the same) Im sure it will get only better! Good luck everyone!

I moved to a Fintech company and got myself a TC bump. So happy with my job now, far less stress, on the right agile environment with whole shebang of different roles who do specific jobs. When I was with EMIT, I did all those roles, all by myself. Now I am so excited to work every day. So happy with the move and TC. Some of my colleagues are currently doing advanced degrees c/o our company, I am going to sign up for that as well!
EMIT has already lost many to FAANG/GAFAM/big tech companies since many years ago now. Those who moved to Silicon Val / West are earning 400K to 600K in total compensation. Of course the west is expensive, but you get the point, EMIT top talents are gone.
"Too conservative."
I've never once been asked about politics in an interview...
You can always tell a existing XOM person, drips with negativity
@Anon poster in disbelief about XOM employees going to tech (Post ID @whn+1cPiC0eW):
You sound as in denial as the XOM leadership whos refusal to change is causing this #Exxodus
What is your new salary and bonuses? How many years were you at EM?
@whn+1cPiC0eW - You gotta walk before you run. You aren’t going to get into a posh tech firm like Google straight out of EM. Join the EM equivalent tech like IBM, Intel, etc or even a smaller firm that’s accepting of O&G backgrounds, then move to the big leagues. Trust me they’re out there. I was a disbeliever like you at first but now I’m leaving for tech and many others as well.
FWIW, I also joined a tech company and got a pay raise. I’m not an IT person either. I’ve seen a lot of posts talking about not being able to leave because nobody else will pay as much. That hasn’t been true at all for me. It took a few months, but I ended up with better benefits, better pay, and a better location.
I took a pay cut as well and am glad I’m out. I was part of the Dec layoff and had a new job before even starting my severance pay. I’m now in manufacturing and the work is great, people are amazing and I don’t have to worry about rankings anymore. The best part is the payout of the pension and at 10 years was decent so I’m even closer to my early retirement goal and hopefully wil be able to go part time by 50.
There are things that I don’t like but I’ve found it greener for the most part.
Life throws you lemons it’s up to you to make lemonade!
OP what size tech firm? Well known brand or smaller firm?
OP here. Just wanted to clarify I’m not in IT either and tech companies need people from all sorts of backgrounds. I did take a pay cut but I’m happy still. My mental health feels so much better and my relationship with my spouse even improved. I feel I have become lighter and joyful and I haven’t realized how miserable I was becoming by allowing myself to be degraded by that toxic environment I was in for years.
Thanks for the encouragement. Posts like this keep that glimmer of hope ignited.
@gtp That’s a self-defeating mentality. You’re never too old to learn something new. You may need to take a pay cut temporarily, but on a risk-adjusted basis your career return may still be better than waiting to get PIPed at EM. Just a thought.
Great for you, but I'm not in IT and so I can't just jump to a tech company. I could take up a new field like data science, but they would be hiring me with no experience/phd so that would come with a huge pay cut. Sadly, I am stuck in this company or at least in this industry.
Congratulations! Up in the middle of the night dreading a meeting with my micromanaging boss tomorrow. Can’t wait to leave myself, forget this place!
Why do so many people keep claiming to have landed posh jobs at tech companies?
Tech companies, in general, don’t recruit from O&G companies. More often than not, O&G employees are older (tech companies favor younger employees), use outdated/legacy software, and have issues with diversity & inclusion since they skew conservative. I highly doubt that people are walking out of XOM and into well-paid tech jobs. It just doesn’t happen.
This is inspiring and would like to make the move by next year.
Really impressed with that Emoji, successful one.
Big tech indeed!
