Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Is it just me or…

Anyone else notice the fear based culture here? It’s like no matter how great you’re doing, you always feel afraid? Upper leadership uses intimidation and publicly humiliates people on calls for performance. It’s strange to me. Maybe it’s normal but it always feels nerve racking.

At first, yes, I was fearful of the constant layoffs. However, it taught me to both increase my 401k contribution (+1% per quarter, 4% per year) to get to 20% a year + the match. In addition, I saved cash money every check (+ wife's check) and now have 3 years net salary in the bank.
Once I focused on what I have control over, it was pretty easy to do. We put together a budget and budgeted in vacations and other discretionary expenses. I barely think about VZ when outside of business hours

By design.
The more you fear, the harder you work.
If you burn out, you quit so no need to pay you severance.

This is the most toxic I have ever seen the culture at VZ. This company is bad for your mental health.

I’m not even talking about the fear of layoffs.. it’s like they keep raising expectations and targets, cut marketing, then rip people a new one in front of 50+ people for not hitting goals. It’s insane. Constantly feel anxious. I don’t know if it’s like this in most companies. Surely not. I’m not new here but am starting to question if other companies are like this.

That’s why Sam uses post it notes. It makes it all go away and we feel better.

@c1 I hope for the same. I am weary of the threats - I do not know how many times I've been told about being "promoted to customer", as though I would stay with VZ if/when riffed. They completely overhauled the work we do, yet I'm being threatened with performance reviews because my productivity changed. I told my supervisor that I no longer trust this company, and I am actively seeking other arrangements. RIF me or I will find my own path, I'm well past and over Verizon.

I wonder what’s the actual work of all the finance Directors they only attend endless meetings and delegate all their work to the senior finance managers and they delegate it to consultants and senior analyst. There are too many 5V in finance doing zero value stuff

How is this different than every company right now? If you feel safe anywhere it is only you tricking yourself. I know people have gotten conditioned by the last 15 years or so or relative safety in jobs, but if you have ever been through this in the 50s or 60s or 70s or 80s or 90s or early 2000s you know it is just not reality. You should never feel completely safe in your job, it is just a false illusion. And as far as Verizon I cannot remember a single year where we didn't layoff twice a year. Sure it may have not been company wide but Verizon has always done it.

Nobody feels secure anymore, anybody could be riffed. When you have that climate in a company you will see performance drop, stress and anxiety rise and people voluntarily leaving - sound familiar?

Incompetent parasitic management are blood su-kers. They will make sure to squeeze every ounce of blood, sweat and tears from you for performance metrics to enrich themselves with bigger bonuses. When you ask them to get the group more help, they come up with a million excuses to keep slave driving you. Dan if you're reading this, you need to trim more fat especially the lazy managers & directors who forward escalation emails to the wrong groups all day pretending to be busy.

Been that way for quite awhile and it will only get worse until the mystery plan is completed.

@a2 — This is EXACTLY Right ……. Zero Training, but loaded up with the work of Three people (that were let go)— and still expected to get it all done by the Deadline, or Else.

and/or they load you down with way too much and expect you to get it all done, accurately, with no training in a very short time frame. If you don't do it, get ready for a pip or bad mid-year.
