Thread regarding Pratt and Whitney layoffs

Will we be able to get our jobs back?

I'm curious, if things pick up again (when vaccine is available and the whole covid thing is behind us) will we be able to get our jobs back? Should we even try or is it smarter to just move on for good?

I'm not a glutton for punishment, I just liked my job and people I used to work with, so going back would be something to aspire to for me, even if I find an interim job until then.

I ditto this. I work in engineering and besides me they were very good engineers, in many ways better and more hard working than me and we were al doing THE EXACT SAME JOB. Don't understand were the better work-life balance comes from when we did the same job. Anyway as you can imagine, they are not with us anymore and I could see the stress and humiliation they faced since right after lock down, knowing they would be the first in line for lay offs. Their work life balance was sh–tier in that sense because they were taking this stress to home everyday, knowing that others are safe and nobody else is in the same boat as them.

I don't know why it's a comparison. Blue badges make more, have actual benefits and vacation/holidays up the wazoo, and aren't the first people to go in times like this (doesn't mean they're invincible, as we're seeing).

The classic defense is "but work-life balance is so much better as a yellow badge". It obviously depends on your job role, but as a blue badge in engineering, I've never had any issues whatsoever with work-life balance. Some days I show up at 7 and leave at 3:30, others it's 9-5:30. As long as you do your job and make sure people have what they need from you, it's not a problem. And this isn't even mentioning how progressive they are with flexible work arrangements and paid personal time.

I’ve been both blue and yellow. Blue is better in every way unless you’ve retired from blue and want an easy job to keep you occupied post “retirement”.

Exactly.

I liken this to dating.

Why would any self-respecting person with an ounce of pride WANT to go crawling back to someone begging for another chance after being dumped?

Yellow badge is not on company pension plan and benefits. You work exactly the same but you are registered as a PO in the system, just like a chair or a desk... no name, easy to replace. The don't have lots of layoff or firing requirements like warnings and notices for you... you won't get the company vacations like plant shutdowns, just the minimum vacations the government mandates.

When I went from yellow to blue badge I got a 30% salary raise+ benefits for the exact same job description.

Yellow badge, not responsible for anything, much better work life balance than that of blue

What are implications of being a yellow badge?
I only know the blue badge life.

There is 100% a wait to come back as a yellow badge.

People who were laid off and called back next day in this round of layoffs or in the past?

I wouldn't advise it. It might be another 2 years before a vaccine is available and use is widespread. That's a long time for an "interim" job. The Company, for whatever reason, didn't value what you did for them. Go find a company that will.

Technically you can’t return for at least 6 months, even as a contractor.

No. People better move on. If a person is laid off, it means that the management believe this person is at the bottom tier. There is no point to stick on.
