Research had a reorg this month which transferred a significant number of employees out of IBM Research US to a software development lab in India. The US based persons are not required to relocate to India, but their role is to help mature the India Software org so that Software and Research employees in North America and Europe become redundant.

IBM business model no longer uses or requires Research. We simply buy other companies with already-finished products.

This is why IBM has already closed multiple entire Research sites.

C,mon Man! This is IBM who has been down sizing and off shoring and laying off for 4 decades! EVERYONE at IBM is in a massive Quantum database and EVERYONE has a RA resource action (ie layoff) bingo number in that database and it is only a matter of time until your number hits BINGO and your are cast off the island with not a nana second of 2nd thought or remorse etc.

The answer to the @OP question is the same as the answer to the following question:
Can the work be moved to India immediately ?
