Thread regarding Imperial Oil Limited layoffs

The Draft Has Started

Oh, you thought they were going to choose the most capable and knowledgeable people? Not a chance. They’re picking the ones who excel at kissing up and delivering polished slide decks to upper management. These are the folks who coast by using the work and expertise of the very people the company isn’t keeping.

They’re selecting the “yes‑at‑all‑costs” crowd—people who are just trying to hang on until the back half of 2028. Some of them even said they couldn’t relocate because of their spouse or personal situation… yet suddenly they’re taking the job?

Honestly, I hope it blows up in their faces when the yes‑people eventually leave, and the company realizes they let go of the people who actually knew the work and kept things running. At that point, they won’t even be able to operate properly.

You’re being naive if you think the selection process was conducted objectively. It’s no different from how management handles performance rankings—rife with bias. The favorites were already chosen for those roles in the new org.

@fy Ah yes, I love this logic — bad company, great people. Sure, some people are great, some not so much… but apparently, the people are the company

@fy the weak Kool aid drinking workers of this company are why the company thought it could act the way it did. If they were stood up to as a group ,they would have thought twice. Also if everyone WAS worth keeping, indispensable let say, they wouldn't be doing this. At the least, everyone is partly to blame. As for who rises, it is usually those who can't. Why waste a position where the actual work gets done?

I know lots of folks who don't fit your description that have been extended offers. Just because your mad at the company doesn't mean you need to sh-t on your coworkers. People of this company are the only good thing about it. If you don't see that well maybe it makes sense why you didn't get an offer.

I don't wish this on anyone. I wish everyone was walking away with their jobs right now. Situation su-ks, don't fault the people that stay. Equally for the people that choose to leave or have been told to leave, my hope is we all find something better than this place.

Some of our yearly contracts were extended. Others will expire by YE.
This is the new reality here at Imperial.
No long term career, just looking for yearly contract renewal.

As someone that was laid off at the tail end of Covid, after 9 yrs with company on top of 15 yrs industry experience and good reviews, this rings very true. My cross shift had zero industry experience but was well liked for bringing ice cream treats in daily to the FLS, they got to stay. Went elsewhere and make more money, more time off, zero expectation of work on my time off and absolutely no stress atmosphere, getting laid off was the best thing that ever happened to me. I feel for all of you that are going through this right now.

Imperial has always put the intersection of the incompetent with the incapable into management. Easier to control.

@OP It was the same story when we left Toronto. Rehire program in Calgary and life went on. Don't let it get to you, do what's right for yourself and your family.
