Thread regarding T. Rowe Price Group Inc. layoffs

Why does it feel like showmanship wins?

Is it just me, or does it feel like you have to be the loudest person in every meeting to get noticed around here? I keep my head down, hit all my goals, and still feel invisible compared to the people who just talk the most. I really shouldn't have to broadcast every single thing I do just for a bit of recognition from management. It gets exhausting playing that game all the time.

@1hg Wow - some people lose sleep over IT people here...I see periodic regular barely coherent rants about "IT Staff" or in this case "IT guy". It's like "show me on this Teddy Bear where the IT guy hurt you". lol Some folks need to lighten up.

@1fj Buddy it’s going to be ok.

Let’s have some fun with this. Everything is so gloom and doom.

1.What office are you in, that you are walking by the IT guys desk?

  1. I bet you were asked to do that update last year.
  2. Mac user?
  3. The aforementioned issue is with a device you have not touched or bothered to log into for six months or longer. (What business case could be made, to justify that purchase? Occasional use? Biyearly?
  4. You have not responded to the multiple attempts, asking you to schedule a time for the aforementioned update.
  5. You could just be a complete Luddite. Company is full of them.

@ma IT dude talking all day again. No work done again. Taking an hour to “fix” something that is a software update again. Never at his desk again. Cosying up to the big boss again. Using AI to do his job again. Eavesdropping on conversations again. Saying he’s helping me when he’s doing his job but barely again.

@19q TRP fits literally all these, and not just in Australia, yikes!

I engaged chat TRP in some simple dialogue about the TRP Aussie office.

When a company feels dysfunctional, it’s rarely because of one person or one bad day; it’s usually a systemic "short circuit" in how the organization is wired.

The "Vision Vacuum" (Lack of Direction)
The "Fear Loop" (Lack of Psychological Safety)
The "Toxic Top-Down" Effect
Structural "Sand in the Gears"

Aussie office sounds terrible.

@z6 it feels like there’s still no transparency with Australian client losses and outflows. Hasn’t been in a long time and somehow I don’t think it’ll change. Thank you though for letting us know more is still leaving. Wouldn’t have known.

@12w either way at the end of the day, what it says about Distribution in Australia is POOR LEADERSHIP.

@12w there is certainly no rhyme or reason to it, even if it coincidentally ends up being a good decision. I can tell you definitively there is no real plan in Distribution to staunch outflows, they just think throwing more products at the wall will help. Meanwhile we are now taking te------t money from Abu Dhabi thinking that will somehow make up for it.

@z6 like I agree with what you’ve said BUT one could say the move on the Intermediary side of the business has been just as rushed as Institutional… or ironically long overdue in both instances.

To the person who posted the 3 "less than well-received" comments in a row, here is some information I would like to share with you.

Alcoholics Anonymous. Find an AA meeting near you: 1-866-788-4739 www.aa.org.

The company also offers EAP (Employee Assistance Program). You seem to be going through a "rough time" and taking it out on others here. Jesus helps too. I'll keep you in my prayers and wish you the best.

@y0 gotta be Australia. Getting rid of Craig and Jonathan was actually good, but the “new org” with Cassie sounds like a rush job that no one really thought throw. Australia is losing clients and assets left and right and there is no real plan to stem the bleeding.

@OP a couple of the “showmen” in my country got made redundant. It looks like the company gave them way too much time before terminating them though. I also believe they had support from higher up and they failed to act. I think the value they destroyed has put the company back years. Peers have leapfrogged the firm significantly. From what I’ve seen, higher management will cut showmen but only to save themselves and it’ll often be waaaaaay overdue.

Every job in the building including portfolio manager can be replaced tomorrow. You splitting atoms over there? To be nice, in reality the stock market is not a healthy aspect of capitalism for the capitalist economy itself. It’s nothing more than a pyramid scheme.
A greed factory with a different name. Like Crypto, it’s a Ponzi.

Considering the very unproductive but also dangerous nature of the stock market, countries would be wise in closing them.

Pretty sure AI will wipe out finance and equity. Sorry your kids won’t be able to get a job here.

@a7 maybe you try portfolio managing a fund? See how that goes. Or trading derivatives if you even know what they are.

TRP should’ve outsourced all IT services long ago.

@f6 I concur and think the only reason why your comment is being downvoted is because of a lot of ignorant, uneducated IT staff are projecting their hate and views of their department on to every other job in the company, also wanting to puff out their chest and justify their lack of output with the knowledge that AI can do a huge portion of their job even if some third world country got their jobs/will have their job. Well done big boys, you guys are so important :)

@fw I know RR was hired because if you look at linkedin KJ was at Fannie Mae when he was, so she likely brought him to T Rowe for that. They seemed all cozy til CLP was brought on. Next thing we know RR gets promoted and KJ out. Would love to know the story, but will never will. I personally am not impressed with any of them. She was weak - road in on the Diversity sled, made a few meaningless changes, pushed out by the men. Like you said, she probably can live off her sign on bonus and who knows what golden parachute she got. Her friend RR likely made it an easy ride down.

@f6 Can you let me know what KJ’s job function was? Asking for a friend?

Can you also answer why her position was made redundant? What lasting Impact did she make on T Rowe price?

Let just start here. Lady put in 30 hours weeks. Please use more than a sentence and verifiable facts please.

Her signing bonus was more than you will make in 15 years.

Ship of fools, on a fool sea.

@OP Oh yes - In fact when my boss is off and his boss hosts our work meetings, I find excuses to miss them for this reason. Everyone wants to highlight how wonderful they are, and in some cases, it causes this one meeting we have that is late in the day to run over, and I have kids to pick up! I feel like saying "Don't waste your breath, they will replace you with Accenture regardless!"

@OP it’s because the company rewards showmanship at both senior and junior levels. Hardworking doers are replaced with people who love talking about themselves and what shiny thing they’re building. The sly “look what I’ve done” is valued more than actually getting stuff done. The people who actually get stuff done are either done or looking to leave. It’s been that way for a while now and nothing has changed. No wonder this place is a failure.

I was let onto a secret last week. Bunch of back stabbing to get to the top. I was under the impression they were the best, since performance is everything in finance. Then, I was told a Km1, traders, upper management, all do roughly the same output a day. Everyone is just plugging in their little piece of the puzzle daily for different pay rates and perks. They are most definitely being over payed when you consider their output and performance.
