Remote Features Disabled

2024 Expedition: Did Ford make an update lately to the battery mgt system that is causing all of these alerts? "Remote Features Disabled to preserve battery"

They're very annoying. Two year old battery and Ford says it is fine. Just drove 200 miles so battery should be fully charged. Two days later I get these messages again.

@g2 2l Edge and 2L escape in my experience have been reliable vehicles. Not sure why this battery failed, but in general every new ford vehicle I have owned the battery lasted five years and I automatically update at that point to avoid problems. In general I keep my vehicles 10 or more years. Also own 2013 2L escape with 120k. Drives and looks like new. Same for my 2012 V6 limited escape with 70k miles. Fluid changes, brakes, tires has been it, nothing major on these cars.
Been buying Ford for 4 decades. Unfortunately both edge and escape are discontinued so when it comes time for my next purchase I may have to look elsewhere. Not really a truck or large suv buyer.

@fy I'm the person who first responded about how certain features function relative to battery SOC. My guess is that it's not the battery per se, it could be that certain subsystems are not going to sleep correctly, draining battery after key off. The only way to know for sure is to have a tech do a "KOL soak" test. We install logging software on your vehicle and put a shunt on the 12V battery and let it sit overnight. We come back and analyze the data to see if any ECUs were awake incorrectly.

  1. Affording a Ford initially is one thing. 2. Affording to own one is a different thing entirely. Sadly, people falsely think they can do #1. Then find out #2 is what really gets them with the inconvenience, downtime, and repairs.

@fy wow, it went 18k without a major failure? Lucky you

2023 Edge, 27 months / 18000 miles. Drove it to Jackson and back to charge battery per warning message. Next morning same message shutting down features to conserve battery. Shuts down ford app, auto start stop feature, plus other features to converve battery life. Replaced battery and all has been good for two months now. They did replace it under warranty, but annoying to take into service. Must schedule appointment and usually 2 to 3 weeks to get in.

You can't go wrong with a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, especially with spring and then summer coming up next. I have some good memories riding around in a wrangler with the doors off

@e4 My son considered a Bronco Sport but bought a Subaru built in Indiana. His Focus was built in Germany while my two Lincolns were built in Mexico and Ontario. Buying American can be difficult, let alone buying a Ford product made in the US.

@dt "What are young people going to buy" is a great point. I worked for Ford Division years ago and the entry/lower cost vehicles were a great way to get first time buyers into the Ford family. I have 2 kids that are looking for their first new vehicle, neither like the Bronco Sport. Even with access to A Plan, they will likely buy from another OEM.

Same with my two Lincolns. Doesn't matter how often we drive them, these alerts are annoying. The dealer changed my one battery last week even though it checked good. My one SUV will disable all interior lights upon entering the vehicle with only the start button illuminated. I hesitate to let my wife go anywhere in either car with our granddaughter in this weather. I'm retired and try to support the company that gave me employment so this is getting frustrating. I never had these issues before in my almost fifty years of buying Ford/Lincoln vehicles. Makes be happy I didn't pull the trigger and buy an EV. I hope some new executive management will address these problems because Ford can be a great company with the right people in charge. I also feel leaving the affordable passenger car business was a massive blunder. What are young people supposed to buy? My salesperson even admitted they're desperate for affordable vehicles since their customers have gone elsewhere. This can't be sustainable under the current regime and product offerings.

We're talking Ford here...probably the ECU. Let's be real.

The battery from the factory is usually the worst battery that will ever be in your vehicle.

So, remote functions turn off at a higher percentage SOC (State Of Charge) than what us normally considered "critical" battery SOC. A battery is considered "bad" if it discharges below 40% SOC. But the features that control your remote functions shut off around 60% SOC, hence the alerts. So, either there's an issue with the ECU controlling your remote functions or your battery is cycling pretty deeply (below 60% but above 40%).
