Thread regarding Elevance Health (Anthem) layoffs

New hire >.<

I Just got hired recently for a provider role and at first when I researched the company I felt like I was confident and excited but now I am finding all these comments and it is making me very worried. I had a couple job offers and of 4 I had I selected Elevance.. now I am wondering if I should continue onboarding with the other company... any insight would be great

@a9
also interviewing for an NP role. Can you please tell me if you accepted the position and if it’s as bad as they’re saying?

Forgot to add, in my department they set monthly production numbers so unrealistically high that no one can meet their numbers. I work on a team with nurses and no one is taking their lunch breaks because they are trying so hard to meet their numbers. People are working way past 5:00 to try to meet their numbers. We have told management over and over the expectation cannot be met but they dismiss our concerns and tell us this is the expectation. If you are unfortunate and at the bottom of the team monthly numbers, then you are the next one picked when RIFs come through. This isn’t just coworkers playing on their phones and not doing their job. The production numbers are crazy high and the only way to meet them is to work constantly 10 plus hours a day without taking a break. I haven’t taken a lunch break in months and I don’t know what it feels like to get off work at 5pm anymore. Run from this job offer. Run!!!!!

If you have another job offer, take it. Do not come here. In the last year they have fired HALF of my team. We started out with close to 40 people in my department and now we have 16. They let some truly talented and wonderful people go with zero warning. The micromanaging is insane. In my department everything we do is listened to, audited, scored. They brought in a new documentation system, HIP, last year that can run reports on literally everything we do during the day and records all of our calls. So of course managers use that to their advantage and we are evaluated and scored for EVERYTHING. Imagine the stress that puts you in everyday knowing you could fail your monthly audit because you clicked one tile wrong and they can now find it based on the reports they can now run in the system. They are now telling us how we should be wording our notes and documentation. I have a clinical background and I’ve never been told how to write my notes. I’ve never seen micromanaging like this in any job I have worked at in my 20 year career. There is constant fear of being the next one rif’d. We all joke that we have PTSD now due to all the rifs, but it’s really not joking. I have team mates with severe ulcers, being hospitalized for high blood pressure, all due to the stress from this company. It is not the same company it used to be and most of the positive reviews you read on other sites are fake or written by upper management. Please please listen to the people on this site. If you have a way to go somewhere else do it. I have been trying for months to get another job and would love to have your opportunity to go somewhere else. Don’t come here!!!!!!!

I challenge you to find any health insurance company in America that does not have employees complaining this much about it on TheLayoff.com

And I got news for you- there is no such thing as job security in any job in America. The only job security that exists is your ability to get hired by another job and/or your ability to employ yourself.

Welcome to ELV!

I was hired almost 9 years ago with the promise it was work from home. They decided to change that recently and we had to go in once a week. Now it is changing again to 3 times a week. Run while you can. This place is empty promises and decimates your mental health.

Are they going to start using NP for PCR reviews? In place of MDs?

There is no future. You will be fired in 6 months. But first your VP and managers will blame you for their mistakes.

Leave while you have a chance somewhere else. Been there for over a decade and it’s worse each year.

In well over 20+ years, I have seen the benefits fluctuate. This includes

  • "holidays" (meaning non-PTO days). We are currently at a high, for my period here, of 10
  • PTO has been reduced from when I started. There used to different times when the amount you got a year increased up to a maximum of 35-40. Not including a splash of 5 days you got for every multiple of 5 year anniversary. Also, the amount you can cover over from year to year has been capped at 40 hours.
  • any unused PTO over 40 hours goes into your Short Term Disability bank, which you can use for doctor visits (or mental health days although it is not spelled out that way)
  • medical/dental/vision benefits always change
  • merit increases appear to have averaged 2% for about the last 12 years

The point being benefits will change. If they do, it is for the good of company (or share holder) not the employee.

If you are the type that worries about being laid off, then this is not a good environment for that. Layoffs can happen normally every two weeks and on a non-pay week's Thursday (yes I know there have been and will be other frequencies and days).

I cannot speak to a "provider role".

If you need this job and do not have alternatives, keep it. I would still look for other opportunities.

The folks above you can make a difference. But realize they could be on borrowed time (by their choice or the companies).

If you have other opportunities, I would encourage you to take a strong look at those. Weigh through the comments here (and Glassdoor) as you might for any purchase you might make (some are paid for, some folks are overly positive, others overly negative, but all have something of value).

Good luck!

Stop whining about being a new hire with an awesome salary. Sick of seeing your poor me posts. Go away. If you are so awesome and all these other companies want you then GO

"So they hire people and then fire in like 6 months or sooner ?"

Not really, but sometimes. Right now the hiring department has to jump through a bunch of hoops to hire during a hiring freeze. You should be good for at least a year if your performance is meeting. They are outsourcing as much as they can, and having AI take over as much as they can. I would stick with your plan and onboard, take the higher salary, but keep your eyes open for a better position. Once your hired, you will see the constant RIF's happening, the tense culture of "am I next". Now some roles cannot be sent offshore or taken over the by AI... and maybe you're in one of those roles. Look at this job as a stepping stone to something better.

I would have a plan to leave as soon as possible. What happens after sometime is that the chaotic culture starts infesting in your brain and prospective employers can tell in interviews that you’re a bit ‘off’. I used to get interviews and offers and since I joined ELV I have received zero offers in the last 4 or so years

The NP role is nurse practitioner
And when I researched I saw the reviews from Glassdoor was 3.4 and even checked out fortunes best company to work for and they had a 83% score. I happened to find this site from a Reddit post so that’s why I’m so shocked. I’m genuinely conflicted now. The salary is a big jump for me as well. Smh :(

So they hire people and then fire in like 6 months or sooner ?

I am not sure how you missed this site if you researched the company. Perhaps because you searched on Elevance Health instead of Anthem or Wellpoint. This place is a dead end. Run, don't walk, to any other employers that are interested in hiring you. I mistakenly hired in near the end of my career and am now stuck until I can retire or get riffed. GO NOW!!!! Do not wait!!!!

You might want to do a search on here. Elevance recently RIF'd the whole ObGyn department. I think it was like 30 people. Doesn't bode well.

Go with the other company. Pretty sure everyone on here will say the same. No opportunity for growth.

Things are pretty bad right now. I weathered >20 years before I was Rif'd off in November. I would stick with your plan, and just put blinders on and see what happens. You are at a risk for Rif at any large company you work for. Just make sure you use them as much as they use you. Get every benefit you can, but never put this job above your family...ever.

Get the he-l out of here, trust me. Onboard with the other company. This place is causing more than a few of us to have to see mental health practitioners. I'm considering taking a huge pay cut to save my sanity.

Sorry this is my first time using this- I found it on reddit while I was researching. So I am not sure how to respond to comments.
I just want to know why it is bad... I saw a lot about lay offs. I ultimately started onboarding with this offer because it was great pay / benefits and it's remote but I have another job offer. So now I really am reconsidering..
Is this an issue with the NP role or other departments?

I won’t tell people where I work, it’s embarrassing now. Used to be a great place, but not anymore. I want to get riffed, been here to long and am of a certain age where can’t just restart again or I would have left.
