$300 Million planned for Workforce rebalancing charges -- same as 2025

In the Q1 Earnings press release (April 22, 2026), WAY down to the financial tables section titled: “GAAP NET INCOME TO ADJUSTED EBITDA RECONCILIATION” inside the table, you will see this line: “Workforce rebalancing charges”

And see the number is $0.3 Billion for 2026, same as 2025 for the 2 months ending in March 31.

Workforce Rebalancing Charges means a one time charges for laying off employees, closing facilities, or changing management.

If IBM continues to use an average cost of $150K per employee, then $300 Million translates into ~2,000 employees.

This is consistent with what they said in January 2026 at the 4Q Earnings call.

@1n8 Sure, i don't wish anyone to loose their jobs, but i'm pretty sure this on the table already. I don't think it's going to save IBM long term, but it's going to happen for sure. Unfortunatelly IBM is going to end up as GE, not cutting their way to prosperity, but cutting their way out of business. Sad, that the main strategy and focus of IBM was in last decades on cutting rather then investing into the future. As some say, you can't cut yourself into prosperity. Don't get me wrong, i still bleed blue, even after getting rusty kn--e in the back in 2024 after 18 years. IBM is in a such downfall from which i don't think it's going to recover.

@1hj talk is cheap - we keep talking and discussing the removal of large groups of Indians but that never actually happens. Not yet anyway...

@c2 I think if Arvind, JK are not complete id--ts then with the rapid development of AI, AI Agents there'll be huge wave of layoffs in India in a year or two. As there's a lot of less complex, repetetive work, it's going to happen soon.

IBM’s sweet spot for profitability when it comes to “enterprise” (think mostly mainframe) historically centers around a 300-320k per employee. You can go back to Gerstner and his restructuring and 300k per employee was the sweet spot even as he downsized the company. So what does that say for IBM’s future? Given the 71 billion in 2026 revenue estimate and 5% growth it says IBM needs to get to 240-245 K worth of worldwide employees as it approaches 2027. IBM has slowly been working towards that goal (employees continue to drop 282 to 270 to 263), while revenue continues to increase (61 billion to 62.5 to 67). I look for stabilization in the 245k employee range. That says 255k of employees in 2026 and 245k of employees in 2027. NOTE these estimates also align with the 1 billion per year of cost take out

@av don't you mean US and European IBMers ? Indian IBMers can be incompetent and doing nothing but they will never get purged from the company the way that "Nickel and Dime" does to US and European employees.

It's blatant discrimination in layoffs and PIPs and DEI garbage from Alvind and his Pipmunks.
