Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Job hunt…

Is anyone having any luck securing employment? I have had no luck after applying to many so called openings. Reading other boards there are many others in the same boat, and I personally have not seen it this bad before. It seems like most of the job postings only exist to get information from people to be sold to others. Did companies just stop hiring? Even outside oil and gas the same seems to be going on.

Just had a former colleague (geo) land a spot after getting fired in Q2 (employer wasn't Chevron). He was mid-process on half a dozen roles and took the first strong offer to present in Houston.

The roles are out there if you're willing to flex network. Having been on the other side of the table (hiring manager), LinkedIn is largely a nuisance. Too many candidates, with too little color surrounding their ability or work ethic. Most jobs get placed through referral.

If you're a glorified geo-steerer or dev planner, times may be rough. But, if you've got any commercial, BD, or E&A experience... there are plenty of teams out there looking for an experienced Geo. Don't give up!

OP, make sure you're not just applying to top well known companies. I was left standing in R1 but I've focused my efforts on applying to companies that have a lesser known name than Chevron but still have competitive overall pay. I've gotten a majority of my interviews at these companies! Currently wrapped up all my final rounds last week and waiting to hear back so all fingers crossed now! Best of luck and don't lose hope!

@ar no tariffs are not the problem. That is lazy and ignorant or you are highly misinformed.

People should start looking at jobs outside of the USA. I accepted a job in Canada a few months ago, offering better pay and benefits. So far, living in Canada has been great. Significantly safer and friendlier than Houston. No regrets,

@f2 Congratulations. How are you feeling about your transition? I hate to sound cynical, but I’ve been questioning my departure from Chevron HEAVY as my team was supposed to get impacted pretty badly but didn’t. I’ve been very mixed about my departure.

@fd Exactly- offshoots rampant in other industries Tough finding something externally. I see people getting positions so keep trying. What other options do you have?

Hilcorp's position "25-123.E1 - Geologist" on LinkedIn has 1,111 applicants (seen through LinkedIn premium).

The job market for petroleum geologists is dead. I'd say go try and find an environmental job that pays 45K on average, but none of those firms want to hire people with petroleum experience.

the job market has been terrible for a few years now from my view unless you're in very specialized tech areas. I started looking two years ago as I knew we were heading into big reorg and did get a couple nibbles but the pay at other companies was so much lower. Stuck it out as a result. I think the economy fundamentally shifted 2-3 years ago and the job market with it. the offshoring is rampant too. it's insane what we've done to our own country job wise.

Departed Chevron in June through AEOI. Began a structured job search immediately and secured a new position by late July, while also progressing significantly in interviews for two other opportunities. Key factors included working with Right Management, ensuring a resume was optimized for ATS, and consistently leveraging professional networks. The process is both numbers-driven and relationship-based. For anyone currently in transition, stay focused and persistent, opportunities are out there and success does come.

“When Oil is up, economy is down”: someone needs an economics lesson! Oil prices move with overall economic activity.

Which one is going in recession. The US or O&G because they are always different. When Oil is up, economy is down. When economy is up, oil is down. See cheap Oil makes the economy go up.

Funny how certain PSG 26s couldn’t land a role anywhere else if their life depended on it. Now it’s just pure survival mode — bending rules, throwing people under the bus, playing the victim when convenient, and clinging to whatever scraps of influence are left. When you’ve got no ethics, no morals, and no real qualifications, “anything to survive” becomes the whole strategy.

I agree with you. We could tariff / tax all corporations that hire workers outside the US. Then we can wait 2 weeks to see what the response from corporate America will be.

Job market os bad across the board, even entry level jobs are few and top ivy league graduates have difficulty finding jobs, openings are plenty for 711 jobs but not many colleg level positions, the economy is not in good shape and all indications are that the us is heading to recession, on top of that many layoffs from many companies means many competitions for few openings making it much much harder to land a job.

With the exception of AI and healthcare, most of the economy is in a torpor. Too much uncertainty on the policy (ie tariff) front. I’d love to see service economy based tariffs. If you outsource knowledge work to a low cost geography, you pay a tax when you bring the ‘product’ stateside. Hard to implement but if a pol wanted to talk about this they could get an audience.
