Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Question to tech crowd

What’s the opinion on this words from MD?

“ Over the past two years, we have built one of the most efficient, data-driven cloud environments in our history, cutting costs, boosting performance, and shrinking our carbon footprint at the same time.
Through smarter architecture, tighter governance, and cross-functional discipline, we've saved double digit millions and improved computing performance all while reinvesting those savings into new digital experiences that elevate how we serve athletes around the world. 🚀
This transformation isn't just about cost, it's about capability. It's about unlocking faster performance, smarter scaling, and stronger resilience. It's about building smarter, recovering faster and managing better through tagging, infrastructure-as-code, and managed platforms. Savings is one of the many outputs.”

Databricks is not going to save money long term, and everyone who cared about data quality let alone integrity is long gone. Garbage in, garbage out. Feed that to your models.

Since when is cutting costs more important than making money? 2019. Tells you everything you need to know about what’s happening, and it all started with the CFO in 2019. MF set a target cut of a billion each year, and tasked McKinsey, Bain, EY, and Deloitte leadership with helping to plan a “resource rotation”. And of course the only way you can do that is to replace qualified employees, consultants, and contractors with the absolute cheapest, laziest, and ethically questionable staffing imaginable. Then use the terrible performance of H1-B and offshore teams as an excuse to replace them with AI. First you lower the bar, then you knock it to the floor. Winning isn’t for everyone. ™

@fw - That’s what you get from a company that built its moat using indentured offshore manufacturing labor and build business on the back of middle and lower class customer base using fake marketing and fake so called athletes. You all should just go smell grass (popular phrase here from some of the Nike lifers here)

Anyone notice that the government shutdown affected all visa paperwork? Can’t hire new contractors. Slowly losing the ones we have. And we haven’t even started getting hit with the new $100,000 per head fee under the new ungrandfathered rules.

Doesn’t matter how well they work. Nike is losing its indentured servants whether it wants to or not. No wonder AI is getting pushed so hard. We need replacement robot slaves.

@f0 why are you interested in knowing people who can differentiate between a$$ and elbow? What kind of fantasy you have

I can count on zero hands how many people I've talked to in ITC that know their a$$ from their elbow.

Why pay US based people when us Indians are cheaper and smarter?

I think there's an embedded message. If you take all the numbers in her post, you get "752056202590237010". Treating the zeros as null values, and using an alphanumeric cipher, we can reconstruct the phrase "BBC gig beg beef": a clear indication that as an organization we'll looking for partnership with the British beef and dairy industry. While this will likely have significant increases on our carbon footprint, I'm really looking forward to some Highland Cattle Dunk Lows.

I’m just glad the move to ITC has been super helpful and there are no problems.

Word salad - unfortunately that’s what Nike leaders have been doing for most of this decade. EH needs to clean the house at 2-3 layers in global tech

What a sloppy toppy word salad.

If we’ve only saved 10 million dollars shipping IT over to India we SC--WED UP. Things have never been more broken. There’s one hundred contractors wearing their pants backwards for every one person that actually knows what’s going on.

Focus and conversation on AI is more than actual improvement in tech solutions. Just Architects and Leaders pushing it to show in their resumes at significant cost to Nike

How's this year's cloud cost savings exercise really going? Not good. Her LinkedIn post said otherwise. Total BS.

How much of this money was just forcing teams to fix bad contracts with bad plans? Nothing technology related at all. Just reclaiming money poor past leadership never should have spent. Now we get to feel the pressure.

Be nice if we can just save the money needed and stop having to talk to go explain to Tech Mod what my tools do. I think a preschool class would better reasonably understand our landscape if explained.

This is business jargon for "I have no idea what I'm doing." It's sleazeball sales tactics.

It's all bullsh-t, not true, and said to make things seem better than they are.

Tech? You should be asking the marketing division what they think. There's nothing technical about that statement.

Sad thing is it likely wasn't written by LLM, but it sure reads like it. Marketroid speak like that is all the same and has been for 30 years. They just string words together that sound good, that's their entire job.

Why we as a Sports company are having the AI buzzword shoved down our throats says pretty much all it needs to about her...like the other poster mentioned, she just parrots the words her "thought leaders" who have not engineered a solution in eons tell her. Just here to increase H1Bs

She repeats buzzwords that have no meaning, pushing projects that have nothing but negative impact on the business.
