Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Why Is This So Hard to Understand?

Some roles need to be in the office. Some people prefer the office. That’s fine, if that’s you, then go in.

But for everyone else whose jobs don’t require face-to-face interaction or physical presence, the choice should be ours or our manager's. Work where you’re most productive, and come into the office when it’s actually necessary. That’s what true balance & flexibility looks like.

I worked from home every single day for 8 years before Covid, with no issues. My productivity was high, my customers and peers were happy, and the work got done. So what exactly changed?.. Nothing, except leadership’s obsession with control.

RTO shouldn’t be forced. It should be optional. Why is this so hard for them to grasp?

@ex We’re all suffering because of nimrods like you stuck in some outdated mindset. You actually believe collaboration only works face to face? Ridiculous. If that were true, why do I have team members in India? Most of us can self-motivate and do our jobs without being chained to an office. Telling me I can only succeed if I’m physically at work is insulting. If that is what station of life you are in by all means get your a-s in the office. You’re Pathetic.

The costs you incur going into the office help circulate dollars through the economy. Thanks for your sacrifice.

“ We get that you are in a different station of life. If you aren’t collaborating more with local coworkers, that’s on you.”
There is no business purpose to collaborate with them other than chit chat and grab lunch. They do something entirely different that is unrelated and we aren’t on the same team. My team is spread across the country as are the people I would need to collaborate with. There’s a lot of people in Atlanta like that on my floor. It wouldn’t even make sense to be in Dallas either as it would be the same story, we interact with different regions for field operations. Everyone was fully remote long before COVID for that reason, it just makes no sense.

“It’s just extra steps, extra time, and extra cost for no reason. That’s the issue. Do you get it now?”

“I don't get it. Why go into the office when nobody hassles me at home?”

Nobody hassles me in the office either, I don’t interact with anyone FTF. Everything is still teams. It’s just d-mb. I drive to an office to just sit at a desk doing the exact same thing I could have done from home. It’s just extra steps, extra time, and extra cost for no reason. That’s the issue. The only collaboration I do is asking folks around me what they want to do for lunch. It adds no value. Not everyone needs to be in an office. Do you get it now?

“ They should pay people who work from home less.”

Stated like a true corporate shill.

Big strong tall man (who is clearly not very smart) needs to dictate to all others that he is king. He reminds me of Peter griffin.

You should be in the office 5x8. Why is that so hard to understand?

Regardless of the merits- working from home, in-office or hybrid, you accepted employment from the company, in exchange for pay. The employer has and always will set the terms of employment (pay, type of work, organization, policies, etc.). As the company/person who employs you, they make the rules, you don't dictate terms to them. This is capitalism. If the policies fail, the company fails, and that's on management. If you don't accept the employment terms, you should leave. Reminds me of the old cliché, the inmates are running the insane asylum; often used in workplaces and organizations, to criticize situations where those who lack the necessary authority or competence are making decisions that should be handled by qualified individuals, regardless if they are believed to be qualified or not.

As other commenters have mentioned, this topic is dead. Complaining will not change the strategy, even if you think you are smarter than the ones in charge. In fact, you should be applying for those positions in other companies! This is the real world.

Regress To Office is a truly insane idea. You can’t recreate 1995.

"Why Is This So Hard to Understand?"
Really. Why is it so hard to understand that if you want a job with AT&T, you gotta work in the office? With the job market softening, company is in the driver's seat.

The Stank’s goal has nothing to do with you being in or not in the office for productivity. It has everything to do with making your life as miserable as possible and make you leave. It’s a documented fact he’s wasted billions of $s and needs to cover his mistakes by sacrificing you and cutting costs. You are a cost to the company and in Stank’s way to making himself look like has financial acumen.

OP - don’t listen to the dim witted schmucks who are just parroting cr-p like:

“The requirements for your job position”

“How dare a company dictate where people work”

I’ve no doubt that these folks bi--h and moan about the “job requirements” that don’t suit them.

Continue to air you pragmatic and reasonable counterpoints as you try to improve company performance through employee satisfaction. Maybe someone will eventually listen even though I expect that to be post-Stanley.

“So what exactly changed?”

The requirements for your job position. If finding you are now in a different station of life where the requirements are no longer a match, make a change.

The goal is for you to quit. Voluntary headcount reduction targeting older employees. If you think it is about anything else you have not been paying attention. Do like everyone else and work to rule. Make them lay us off.

I worked from home for over 20 years and was a top performer in my organization. My productivity was high as well and my management loved me. I got things done and ensure people did not make d-mb mistakes. My director and AVP did everything they could to keep me as long as they could and to take care of me. I extended once and was asked to extend a second time but chose not to extend the second time. I am happier at my new digs just worry about my friends and old co-workers who are still there dealing with the mental abuse and the constant threat of layoff looming over their heads.
