Thread regarding Elevance Health (Anthem) layoffs

Unlimited paid time off.

Interviewing @Elevance... What are your thoughts on it? What are the pros and cons, and are there any hidden downsides to watch out for? It sounds almost too good to be true.

actually it works well for me because i manage my time, my projects, and my responsibilities well. i plan ahead, communicate, make sure all my ducks are in a row. i like not worrying about drawing from a pto bank, and i am not from one of those states with generous PTO payout laws. so it's been an improvement for me.

Bruh, I’m in California, we can accrue, in my case, almost 180 hours before we cap out.

I had about 140 hours…

You need to make certain you put in for your time. I take at a minimum 6 weeks as an associate with unlimited PTO, otherwise it is not worth it.

Elevance has multiple RIFs per year and they moved to unlimited PTO to remove liability from the books. When they RIF you, they owe you nothing but basic severance. Unused vacation time no longer exists.

Accrued but unused PTO appears as a liability on the company balance sheet (like an IOU) - if you wipe the accrued PTO from higher earners it makes the spreadsheet look better. McVesty sc--ws some of the calculations but I am sure they know that unlimited PTO works to their benefit.

@g2 Right that’s how it works by design. Technically you lost it but you gained unlimited pto. So make sure you take as much pto as you can. I know my coworkers are and just sc--wing the people over on the team that don’t have unlimited pto because. Is I have to do more work to cover for the people who get unlimited.

@f5 not true re: the 40 hours. Some states like CA and CO - I think 3 others, have laws that say you can’t restrict annual rollover though they can cap it- (I think the cap is 150 hours). So you could have 149 hours of PTO - get moved to unlimited and then if you can’t take off that time it is a loss. If you are RIffed and that PTO has in effect been “disappeared” it is not getting paid out; that is a loss.

@ew you are Da Chump by your own post- this is by far the winner of the week for the d-mbest response yet - what is your point - looking for Martyr of the Company Good Award for the quarter or some plant

Countless people have and will say - unlimited for thee not me says their Director and it will not be approved around peak times and you won't be able to say "I have all these hours I will lose if you keep blocking me from taking them" since it is unlimited that whine holds no water.

And lastly to the poster who said "I was put on this as of January this year when I still had significant time “in the bank." I again call BS since you can only roll over 40 hrs that is the total amount of SIGNIFICANT TIME you had in the bank.

There’s two types of unlimited PTO employees: 1. Smart people who coast, never volunteer for anything, and work 9-4ish, plus 1hr lunch will take off a week every other month, get promoted. 2. Chumps like me work 11-12 hr days with no lunch, never use time off, volunteer for everything, mentor teammates, take training, document well, and care about accuracy and efficiency die of heart attacks.

I left last year. They switched my role from the normal accrual to unlimited PTO.

People abused it and took 40-50 days off and then as a result by August they capped our PTO for the remainder of 2025. It su-ks but so does the company.

Unless you are coming in as someone in power’s BFF or a nepo baby the unlimited use of PTO will not be unlimited for you. There are nobles who do nothing, get paid alot and take tons of PTO and then there is the peasant class at all levels who have the workload of up to 3 people now and barely get unlimited bathroom time. Doubtful that you will walk in off the street and be part of the royal court.

Doesn’t matter. Whether I had already taken that time off or not I still get “unlimited” pto.

Can you see the problem here?

Don't fall for it, it's the worst system ever, you'll end up taking less vacation than you would otherwise. Every time you ask for a vacation the boss will frown at you, and may not approve it because any project is more important than your personal life. A lot of people do not take enough time off in this system for fear of being perceived as slackers (as opposed to having to use your accumulated time off). "Unlimited" PTO is slavery at its finest.
