Layoff Process

I've heard that the layoff process canbe brutal. Can anyone shed some light on what ctyally happens on layoff day? (Looking for answers, not drama from some troll.) How long do you have to sign the separation papers? Is it before you leave the room or do you have some time before you HAVE to sign?

On lay-off day there is plenty of crying, hugging, screaming, and every bit of human nasty behavior you can think of. For sure they want you out that day. Whether security escorts you out is company dependent. You likely will be locked out of the computer before you get back to your desk to clear things out. If you have any personal emails or other personal material on the computers delete them now. Good luck to all.

The process will be different based on what country you are based. Last big layoff that was done, you were called to a conference room, given your package and then provided time to clean up your desk by yourself and told to leave the building by a certain time. They provide a taxi chit to get home. You have a certain amount of time to review and return signed. Always a good idea to consult a lawyer to ensure your package is fair. This is in Canada.

You’ll get a phone call or an Outlook invite from your manager instructing you to meet them in a conference room on a different floor. You walk in and your manager is there with someone from HR, your manager hands you a letter informing you of your termination and they will walk you through the severance documents. You’ll get a folder containing those documents to take with you.

After that, you get escorted back to your office to collect personal items and say goodbye to coworkers if you’d like. Then you’re escorted down to the front desk and badged out for good. Whatever you don’t take with you will be packed up and shipped to your home address.

You have 30-60 days to sign and return severance agreement.

I’ll add that it may be in your interest to NOT sign immediately. Depending on the particular day of your layoff, you may be able get to defer signing it for 60 days and push the severance payout to 2026. This will help out for 2025 taxes.

It is very straightforward. The training in Workday explains it all so I wonder if you are even an employee?
Sign the papers if you want the severance package.
You don't have to sign them. It us up to you.

The only thing you would be asked to sign is paperwork for the additional severance benefits beyond the minimum, and you have 60 days to do that.
