Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

so like, what's the incentive to work hard?

Dell had a record breaking 120 BILLION dollar year last year, along with amazing quarters and yet... IBP multiplier was only 126%??? Raises were literally pathetic, promotions are MIA for US employees. Insperity points have been super scarce lately as well.

I love my job simply because it's actually fun, interesting, and easy... along with the fact that I work about 30 hours/week however, I'm failing to see the point in doing anything more than the bare minimum of my job at this point.

@et Yeah, Karl Benz did but who cares? Ford revolutionized it and made it something that Karl Benz couldn't. A device that could be "mass" produced and affordable to many.

You are not alone. As far as I can tell, a lot people are thinking this way and doing this way. At the current dell, there is no point to be a b+ and above employee.

@OP Mr Original poster -

THERE IS NO NEED TO USE THE WORD ‘LIKE’ IN YOUR TITLE. NONE.

It’s absolute loser chat, so, like….

Absolute loser. Go find another job, stop whining and hit the bricks pal, you’re fired. Absolute loser

@c1 Yeah well, I'm not on the Corporate side of Dell - yes, there IS another side of Dell, and we do things VERY differently - so we seldomly ever get decent budgets, let alone REQS for promotions. Everyone is so quick to assume it's due to performance issues when it's not.

I worked my A-S off for 6 years - regular weekend work, after hour work, and so much more... and it's just the same ol story - budget wasn't there. Didn't get any REQ's or bla bla bla... Though, my raises were always 5-11% so I suppose in some way I can't complain too much.

Last January I was asked to fill out a new application for a promotion and it was pulled away because they miscalculated the budget and said the "budget wasn't there" for promotions this year LOL. WHAT?!

@aa Let me guess, you are in sales and are REQUIRED to be in office 8 hours a day lol... - which technically you aren't, as that is not an official company policy - but my guess is you are in sales due to your extreme bitterness LMFAO

Dude, you have NO idea what I actually do at Dell, what my position is or responsibilities are.

40 hour work weeks quite literally came from and started with Henry Ford when he invented the car. Which required factory workers. The entire 40 hour week has been unnecessary for a LOT of jobs for decades at this point. My dad is 72 and when he was in his 30's working at Motorola, nobody was ever working true 40 hour weeks.

The entire "40 hour" work week is outdated and ridiculous. Depending on the day and what needs to be done, I can get a large portion of it finished before 11am, or spread it out through the week if I want to. I'm getting paid a lot of money to basically play video games, nap, take my dog for walks, grocery shop, and game the vast majority of any given week, though.

My job is not super proactive but more reactive and I do not have to interface with anybody external to Dell. I manage thousands of things but, if they are not needing managing then well...

I'm getting my sh!t done, doing what is expected of me, and doing exactly what my job description is requiring me to do. Not my fault I can get my work done in 30 hours or less/week.. Guess what managers/execs care about? RESULTS! Mangement only cares about RESULTS my friend. How long that takes you is 100% irrelevant.

If you can do what is asked of you in 30 hours and it is what management is wanting, then that's all that ever matters dude.

Like I said, you are probably a su---r stuck in sales who has VP's requiring 5x8 work days. SU-ks for you buddy!

We all have options, not happy with the work, raises,or having showing up to work? Time to look for something else someplace else, or start your own company, then you can give your self as many days off, raises & bonus that your performance provides.

There’s no reason to go above and beyond here. You are never recognized for anything except if something goes wrong. Then you’ll hear about it for months. Extra effort is someone that is never noticed.

Cheat the poor, sweet company that's done nothing but be-doverbackward for the employee base, at every opportunity? How could anyone be so heartless?

@OP So let me get this straight. You openly admit you only work 30 hours a week (25 of which is probably non productive), you get a 126% IBP ...

... And you're complaining?

People like you are what's wrong with Dell. You cheat the company. You openly don't put in a full week's work. You bi--h and moan over a 126% IBP modifier? People like you need to leave or be fired ASAP. And take other useless do-nothing crybabies with you.

@bw

it's not 1980 any more, chief. companies like Dell have systematically worsened the employee experience to further enrich a select few. active disengagement is one way to tip the scales a bit in the other direction. it's not nearly enough but it's a start.

too bad if you don't like it but your moralizing is pathetic. go put a few extra hours into your work duties. it's bound to pay off sooner or later, right?

meanwhile, I'll be putting paid time into my own pursuits as i chuckle at your utter naivety. maybe I'll find a way to waste some company resources today, in your honor.

have a nice day and don't forget to work hard! 😘

There is no incentive to work hard. I quiet quit in 2016 and have been promoted twice since then. I honestly put more effort into looking like I am working hard than I do actual work.

Most id--tic post I've seen (and there are few up here). Integrity and a solid work ethic. The reason you work hard is you are drawing a paycheck and that demands 100% effort. Quiet quitting, working below the threshold, not contributing all equate to theft. If you're not happy, start looking elsewhere as any company you work for deserves your best effort. I think after looking around you may find your situation isn't as bad as you make it out to be.

I actually work hard and got promoted this cycle. If you make yourself indispensable and threaten to leave then they will make you a priority. If you work 30 hour weeks and your manager knows you don’t have the talent or confidence to look elsewhere then you’re stuck

@OP I get your angst, but 30 hours a week in effort you've admitted to is stealing. Your f-ing stealing and IMHO should take full time pay for part time effort until they force you out. It's what I did for ten years, even before the EMC acquisition. I was layed off last year, but was stealing for years. You work for a huge financial engineering company that happens to sell technology products. The products don't matter, because only a few companies sell them, and they're all operating by a 'who su-ks less' operating model. Most customers are sc--wed by the physics and limitations of the available tech. Hide in your cubby hole, take the paycheck and look for fulfillment elsewhere. One a hiking trail, or a ball field with your kids, or doing pottery. All work is drudgery, that's why they pay you. Maximize non-work and take pay for no work if you can.
