Thread regarding SAS Institute layoffs

Thoughts on the 50th anniversary picnic?

Does anyone remember the 25th anniversary party? If not, it was a huge party at Walnut Creek. The 50th is laid out like the spring picnics we had before COVID (and after the demise of the SAS winter parties (because of drunken debauchery..cough cough, I mean cost). SAS used to have such fun gatherings, and now the 50th anniversary is reduced to an on-campus picnic. I know there are bigger things to worry about, but from an optics and marketing perspective, it seems a little weak for such a milestone.

Tell me you’re an entitled SAS employee without telling me you’re an entitled SAS employee.

Shook my bo--y to KC and the Sunshine Band, poked fun at the Village People 2.0 (they su-ked as much in their reinvention as the original cast), ate some substandard hog trough fast food, slurped down a 20 ounce brew or two, schmoozed for a couple more hours to sober up and departed!

Damn that seems like a long time ago ☮️ … but then again it feels like I could just walk through the curtain of time and be right there 😉

@tm Company man #4 here. I don’t disagree with that. Regardless of whether the layoffs were warranted or not the party timing was horrible and showed a complete lack of awareness that those layoffs would impact morale for those left behind as well.

"Remember the party after the testers were laid off? A lot of us thought that was in poor taste."

A few things in life are black and white. This was one of those things and it was clearly in poor taste. That is the day that I realized what creeps BH and JP are.

It sounds like I didn't miss much of a party at Walnut Creek.

Remember the party after the testers were laid off? A lot of us thought that was in poor taste.

In this time of cost-cutting, a smaller celebration seems appropriate.

Yes I remember the 25th anniversary party at Walnut Creek. It was very hot, in the 90s that day. The party was after work so employees and their family headed to WC right at rush hour. The line to get off the 440 exit was really long and slow. When we finally crawled into the park with our two, young kids, who were hot and hungry, we got in line for concessions.

At the time, there weren’t the number of concession lines as they have now. We waited like 30 minutes and got to the window and they stopped serving concessions. They had been instructed to stop concessions since JG would be speaking on stage and they wanted people to go listen. We didn’t move. Finally after some time, they reopened and we got water and some cr-ppy fast food. We went over to the stage, and listened to KC and the Sunshine Band sing for about 15 minutes before we shook our heads and left.

I sent an email to someone who planned the party and asked why they didn’t close the restrooms since that made as much sense as closing concessions. They agreed and said it wasn’t smart to do.

But will there be bouncy houses?
How about Howling Cow ice cream in those little school cafeteria cups? Asking for a friend’s children.

"But even I agree a post complaining about the picnic is lame. It's actually worse than lame, it's entitled."

While normally I would agree with that sentiment, I think the OP was not so much complaining as merely pointing out that it's surprisingly low-key for such a momentous milestone.

@ej For 99% of the people on here the picnic has zero to do with that. When you are in charge of such events you can make them whatever the f&&ck you want.

Go start your own company and call the shots.

If you don’t have confidence in your future here then you should leave. Really.

Not leaving says a sh&t ton about you.

A picnic seems like a “low cost” effort for a milestone celebration. Employees lose confidence in their futures here.

I'm not pro SAS by any means. Most of what I say here is negative bc that's the nature of my sustained experience during my 10 plus years here. But even I agree a post complaining about the picnic is lame. It's actually worse than lame, it's entitled. This is why some ppl are called SASholes.

"Marketing perspective"... were the parties pre-COVID for marketing purposes? Or, were they an opportunity for employees to gather and celebrate an occasion. And maybe Dr. G wanted to keep it simple, as he's living his life most of these days

I'm not seeing the direct correlation with what the employee picnic has to do with marketing of our software or revenue generating. There are bigger things to complain about. Your entitlement is showing.

I'm hardly a company man type but dude come on. Are you seriously complaining about a free party? Complain about anything else but not a party that isn't for you and that you aren't required to attend. Stay home and get dronk if that's all you care about. While you're at it light some fireworks and maybe nature will take its darwinian course.

@OP Doesn’t seem weak to me. Not possible to do the parties of old sheerly because of size.

Picnic area, soccer fields, softball fields full of people(and family) with food, big fireworks is not a shabby thing.

I still continue my prediction of some form of announcement coinciding with the 50th. With small layoffs coming sometime before that.
