Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Oracle Layoffs 101

Let me save you some time scrolling through the portal. Key info:

Will there be layoffs this year? Yes. Why? Because Oracle does layoffs every year.

Which roles will be affected? All roles.

Will my product be affected?

If your product makes money and revenue is growing → less likely to be affected. low performers will be let go.

If your product isn’t making money or revenue is shrinking → higher chance.

Being part of OCI or AI → safer.

Not in cloud or AI → more at risk.

End of story.

@n1 Low performance is defined by the outcome of your performance review, simple as. That's why they boil your performance down to a single number from 1-5 every year. Managers generally have to hand out a bell curve of ratings, so the individual 1s and 5s in your team might be way more or less competent than the individual 1s and 5s in another team. That makes no difference when it comes to deciding who to cut.

@n1 define low performance. Manager basically lines people up from “most important” at the top to “least important” at the bottom.

@OP By and large correct but define low performers? It is not a level playing field in all business lines. In those areas, if you are good and management feels threatened, you are done. If you are not a good brown nosed - you are done and so on.
Be nice.
We know that many in the September RIF were not let go for performance reasons. Some were definitely let go because they were older which could translate to being in a higher salary band.

Sobering data from Challenger on the US labor market this morning:
Announced job cuts in January more than doubled year-over-year, hitting their highest level since the 2009 Great Recession.
Most notably, these layoffs are occurring while GDP continues to grow at approximately 4%, accelerating the decoupling of employment from economic growth—a phenomenon that, if it persists, has profound economic, political, and social implications.

@ec if you think you will get 26 weeks then you have been long for Oracle. Your skills are outdated and probably the last time you stopped work we had modems and windows 3.11. You are my friend a dinosaur or badly educated about the RIF package

I second that the job market is TRASH. Even AI people are getting the axe.

@dc Agree. It's a very tough and competitive job market. AWS had a huge layoff recently. Microsoft had a big layoff late last year. Many of these folks are very capable and talented. Honestly, I would start looking for a role now. It might take 26 weeks or more to find a new role. Just my 2 cents.

Personally I'm just waiting to see how this all pans out. For me if I were RIFed it would be a blip, I have been able to stop working for years, would probably find something more fun and laid back to fill the time, but from a finance perspective would not bother me. The potential payout would be nice, 26 weeks but were it not to happen oh well. Realize that this situation would not apply to everyone, but some of us live well beneath our means and have been saving and investing for this eventuality. Good luck to all no matter what happens =)

@a7 I understand your sentiments but I can’t stress enough how self defeating it is to “quiet quit” instead of looking for something better. The job market is indeed bad right now, but it’s worse for people who are out of work.

My sincere advice to people who are unhappy at Oracle (I am among them): don’t let corporate indifference and nihilism infect you. Take your paycheck, control the things you can control, and spend every free second of the work day looking for greener pastures. They’re out there.

@a7 great decision, appreciate that. You are the winner as you do not sacrifice your precious private time like your evening hours, your weekends, your holidays for free like many exhausted and burned-out employees there who finally were fired.

"I have stopped working until the layoffs are complete." lol, then you are a potential RIF candidate anyway, now or may be in next round :) You think no one is noticing you?

I remember interviewing for a PE position in OCI and the interviewers were all full of sh-t. How anything gets done there and what these people do is amazing. Its all nepotism and DEI based
