Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

You won’t get better work from people by forcing them to come into the office

Saddened by this announcement - with culture being at the center of so many conversations this year, I’m disappointed that leadership thinks this is a step in the right direction for our culture (And from whose perspective? Culture isn’t what leadership says it is - it’s what employees actually feel when they work there.).

There are a lot of hardworking employees who thrive professionally (and personally) while working from home AND actually get more done there than in the office.

And those that KNOW they get more/better work done at the office make a point to go there since it’s open 5 days a week to them.

If Chevron is worried about competitive performance, focus on hiring and retaining GOOD workers who know how and where they do their best work and let them do it.

You won’t get better work from people by forcing them to come into the office - this simply reflects that leaders are more productive in the office than at home.

I share the sentiment and agree wholeheartedly with the poster. Putting it up for visibility.

You guys are worried about having a job or whether or not you have whipped cream in your fancy cappuccinos? Make up your mind.

@km do you think it's impossible for people to work from home? I know it's possible. Everyone works differently.

@km it’s about getting them to quit

Lazy people who don’t do any work from home also don’t do any work in the office.

@km+1k507v0d9 Either someone from the field who just doesn't comprehend educated work or its MW. Plenty of work is done from home but at this point why should we do anything but collect a paycheck

OP, I believe that you're completely missing the point. It's not about "Getting better work from people" . It's about getting them to work, period.

I have no issues coming in the "office." But it's not an office. It's just a VERY NOISY OPEN FLOOR!
Having 6 other people around spending the whole day in Teams meetings, pretending they work, IS NOT A PLEASANT EXPERIENCE!

@ec it’s highly dependent on the function and job. Some can be done just as easily from home. Some can’t. Just because it can be done from home doesn’t mean it can be done from India, either.

And no one will demonstrate instances where RTO beat WFH either.

The real tragedy is many of us wanted out in the reorg but in the ABU, looking after managers with fat payouts was the goal.

WFH was fun while it lasted. It institutionalized "come in late, make up for it by leaving early". We all know that precious few jobs can be done well alone and away from the office, and even fewer people were good at it. Just look at all industries - even Cali tech companies are calling their people back in. There will be hysterical responses to this post, but no one will demonstrate instances where WFH beat RTO. Amazing correlation between WFH and Chevron's 0-for-50 exploration success during that time.

It was nice while it lasted. 4 days in office is better than 5! Hopefully BBL prices will increase a bit more now

I'm OK with coming in 4 days and knew it was only a matter of time. I'm much less pleased with the unassigned "hot desking" and removing all personal/family touches from the offices and the extra unproductive time it takes to adjust settings. Still all of that is much better than getting left standing.

@d0, If the uncomfortable truth is that I still have a job that pays the same and I can still support myself and feed my family instead of being let go, I'm good.

Just wait until the Kalifornians figure out how to be tunnel rats. Stressed? I’m going for a walk. Just worked out in the fitness center? Need to cool down in the tunnel. Hate the coffee in the little cafe? Need to caff up in the tunnel. Eye strain? Time to hit the tunnel!

@ce the company culture is hierarchical, not a meritocracy. Ideas that originate at low levels have no merit. Conform or leave.

That’s the culture of chevron today.

Which is fine, if the ideas from the top have merit.

All the snide remarks from the same poster at the bottom of these comments reveal what stupid people think: “work” can only be done if you’re sitting in the company office.

Since that’s apparently what leadership also believes, I will no longer be answering calls or emails or Teams chats unless I am physically at the office.

All the snide remarks are unnecessary. Performers and people who love working for Chevron are allowed to share their feedback, both here, and more importantly, directly with leadership. This thread doesn’t reflect someone who wants to do less work. It reflects someone who cares deeply about company culture and what it means to works for a great company. Those who are making snide comments don’t contribute to a good company culture - think about that.

Get back to the real world. XOM has been five days in office for years. COP is the same. If you don’t like it, take your whiny little self and go work somewhere else.

@b8 You have hit it on the nail.

What we are not acknowledging openly is that it has been a constant takeaway of benefits and perks for the last several years, and frequently in a very quiet manner as not to rile up employees. This RTO announcement is the latest.

I have ZERO problem with hard work for fair pay and treatment. But that’s the what is leaving a sour taste for so many. It feels like we had an “agreement” of what it meant to work here and expectations. More and more has been added to our plates; resources are fewer and fewer. But we adapted and rose to the challenge. We worked the longer hours to take those early morning or late evening calls. We adapted to the constant peaks with more frequent deadlines. We agreed to take on what felt like constantly changing deliverables. Why? Because it felt like a give and take, with the flexibility of WFH that allowed us to fit the added demands of work by squeezing in personal lives. If I had to work a 12-hour day, I could WFH and not have to sit in traffic for 2 & 1/2 hours that day. That flexibility made the added job demands more manageable.

So what now? We have a workforce, at least in the U.S., that is demoralized and disenchanted with management. MW, the ELT, and senior managers have lost credibility with employees. The word “trust” is laughable at this point. Whatever leadership communicates in the future will be heavily scrutinized and mistrusted by the average employee. And that should concern us all. THAT is the culture that MW has so recklessly created, and it will cause untold harm. It is shocking to see the carelessness and lack of strategic thinking that we are witnessing from the #1 person in our company. Action MUST be taken to mitigate the damage that MW is doing to our beloved company.

Unfortunately within Chevron there are many low and mid-level supervisors whose primary skill is monitoring presenteeism. Even before Covid, I had many supervisors who were far more concerned with the times that people arrived and left, and the length of time spent at lunch, than the quality or quantity of work output. Many individual contributors recognised this, and optimised for being seen to be at their desks than any form of meaningful output.

In my area in Wave 1, at least anecdotally, those that spent the most time at their desks, and those that supervised them being at their desks, were the ones that were selected.

I even had one colleague whose only piece of feedback during their end of year PMP was that they needed to be at their desks than more - there was no discussion whatsoever as to their work.

Regardless of the unnecessary spiteful remarks below. It is a removal of one of the perks that made it worthwhile putting up with the endless drivel that comes down from above. It wasn't unexpected that they would remove this and I'm guessing it wont be the last perk to go either.

Investment management companies are forcing employees back to the office. The corporations are merely following directives.
