Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

2026 and 2027 company outlook

How does it look for the forthcoming years in terms of RTO? Are they going to close more non-hubs, open new hubs, force 3 days instead of 5? Who’s got the crystal ball?🔮

It will remain on the downward spiral into the abyss.

@e6 That raises questions about AT&T's underfunded pension.

If many employees retire from a company with an underfunded pension plan, the company may be forced to terminate the plan, and the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) will step in to pay some retirement benefits, though possibly less than what was promised. The company might also try to "freeze" the plan, stopping future benefit accruals for employees. This situation puts financial pressure on the company and may lead to a reduction in benefits for employees.
What happens to the employees
PBGC takeover: The PBGC will take over the plan if the company terminates it because it cannot pay benefits.
Reduced benefits: The PBGC's guarantee is capped, so retirees may receive less than their full promised pension.
Plan freeze: The company could freeze the plan, which means employees would stop earning future benefits but would not lose any benefits already earned (their "vested benefits").
What happens to the company
Financial strain: A large number of retirements will put a significant financial strain on an underfunded pension plan, potentially leading to termination.
Legal action: The company may have to prove financial distress to a bankruptcy court or the PBGC to terminate the plan.
Plan changes: The company can modify its pension plan rules to reduce future benefit accruals, but it cannot take away benefits that employees have already earned.

The outlook will be about 40k less employees than today (currently around 129k). Only a few hub locations (if any). A lot less revenue and a huge shedding of subscribers. Most exempt and non-union workers currently over 55 would have been laid off or retired. Though I suspect that’s coming sooner than later.

telco is an industry in decline. It is going to fall and fall...until it is replaced. Like the old thing which made tape players. It disappeared so so fast...as it was outdated. We have reached the end. Blame in dia! Blam e In di a!

It is only going to get worse until we hit whatever magic revenue-per-employee number the wall street NPCs want. They will start firing people for being the lowest on the presence report until they can't discern who that is or they hit their desired number.

@b3

That said early 2026 those not currently reporting to a one of the 42 designated metro locations will recieve a letter telling them where they will need to report to by spring 2027. They will get 60 days to agree to it formally. If you say no, you go directly to the layoff list to be terminated either immediately or upon the next designated layoff. AT&T will thin the thanks further as a result.

So lie, say you’re going to move, and don’t stay on payroll til 2027 - got it.
Worked out for me last time, lied about moving, date came to go off payroll, I said I’m going to resign, they gave me virtual.

Stankey can go fu-k himself.

AT&T cannot grow revenue enough to meet the current head count levels; therefore, Stank will continue to make work life miserable so people will quit without severance as much as possible.

I am working from home through March 2027. Team is specialized and they cannot figure out what to do with us being spread across 8 States. Everyone declined a move to Atlanta or Dallas.

Good grief, just show up to work 5 days. RTO will end within 6 months. No one will say anything they’ll just stop caring if you show up. RTO has run its course for the intended purpose of self termination.

5 days won’t change. That’s the only thing you can bank on. Stank said it and he never changes his mind because data and statistics don’t matter.

It doesn't matter to me. I'm going to continue in person work reporting to the yard and dispatching in my company vehicle.
