2 managers recommended a position to me. Later found it has a seated incumbent.

All positions in scope now are changing because they're adding job duties that weren't previously part of that role. So, yes, some positions do have people already in seat from old job duties but the people there now may not be the best candidate to also do the new job duties as well.

We were told if your position is not changing then the position would stay and the incumbent would be out of scope. Is that not happening? It is all sounding like a complete clusterf***

The incumbent will get the position unless they leave. That’s what we would do if we were the job owner. They can’t tell you not to apply even if you’re wasting your 3 slots.

@e6 the managers are giving hope even though it’s false. the selection reps don’t know if there’s a strong incumbent and you can not talk to the job owner so you’re just out of luck.

I had ELT asking for a “list of my friends” making comments that they would be “strongly considered” - source I am a team lead

They may know the incumbent is an underperformer, or taking the EOI, or looking to move roles.

No interviews, and past performance doesn’t matter at all. Job owners will keep those already in the position first, then their friends, and after that—it’s completely random. An interview or considering past performance would be nice, don’t you think?

I was asked and encouraged to apply for a Job by Job owner and couple of senior folks in same team and tell you truth.. I have no confidence in those guys.. I have my job in org and that what I am applying for.. Have heard this from many folks, there is so much misguidance from lot of these guys at top. They don't care about you stay in Job or not.. think and do what's best for you based on your judgement.

What’s the position?

(1) Almost every job will have an incumbent, (2) Even incumbents are applying for other jobs, and (3) Having a recommendation from two different managers should give you confidence and not fear - most people have no endorsement either way. Have some confidence, dude.

Most positions will have a seated incumbent. What is your point?

They may have other plans for that person

So what if it has a seated incumbent…doesn’t mean anything. If the incumbent wasn’t closed into the position, the person could be lousy or could be taking EOI.

Hearing the same story with many people. It's malice. Or incompetence.
