Thread regarding TIAA (TIAA-CREF) layoffs

Why do *YOU* Work Here

Honest question, why do you like working at TIAA? There seems to be so much contention about poor management, legacy technology, in office requirements, and vast pay differences.

What is it that keeps you here? Especially those of you that have been here for so long. Are you hoping for things to go back to the good old days?

@OP don’t work there anymore but I did work there for a long time because I got six figure bonuses! No other reason.

@qc nope… maybe you’re the troll…
I created this thread an am definitely not HR, never have been and despise our HR department. I’m in IT, and been here for a long time but feel the last 5-7 years have been the worst this company has had in my tenure. I basically took a copy paste from Charles Schwab and other FinTech sites posting the same question.

Just trying to get a feel for why everyone else is staying here.

I am old and my knowledge is not competitive. But I can talk a lot as I know TIAA eco-system pretty well. I know lots senior management and they support me. But honestly my technical knowledge is good that I can crack interviews. without knowing details of cutting edge technology, here people think I am a great Architect.

ONLY to pay my bills, at this point. I like my immediate a lot, but derive zero enjoyment or fulfillment from my work anymore.

@dz agreed. The bonus is and always has been a massive dangling carrot. It will likely be lower this year than years past, especially with the new rating scale. I would take the bet of raises not happening for anyone over 100k again, like last few years.

Meanwhile if people put effort into finding work elsewhere they could potentially make more money, get a bonus there, and have a sene of job stability/security… before being laid off - with a likely new and worse severance policy, which has only gotten worse over the last few decades, once Denver’s closure completes.

@a4 True that. But after 2/26 all bets are off if meager raises (or none) and the bonus which is the dangling carrot.

@a4 interesting staying 4 more months somewhere you don’t seem to like just for a 15-25% bonus is an interesting choice. Would be different if you were at 50% or perhaps a Denver March layoff.

I’m only here because I love my team and work I do. Everything else su-ks but it is a paycheck in these tough economic times. I know someone leaving soon because of the Denver closure and it’s going to su-k going on without them. Probably my only friend here left. I don’t see myself staying much longer either.

I hate it here and am only staying out of spite

I worked there for 15 years because I made stupid money for doing mostly nothing. Benefits couldn't be beat and virtually no accountability - just like the academic jobs most the clients had!

I been working for TIAA for 10+ years, enjoy my job, my direct management and I get paid pretty well. However TIAA is just an employer and I don't care about the TIAA name. It is the direct management that keeps me here.
