Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Desperation drives bad behavior

The managers are battling it out as there are fewer jobs than the overpaid managers who just supervise and delegate. Work gets done without them and they are redundant. Hopefully the number of those positions are reduced. Managers make snarky comments, challenge each other with questions in meetings trying to make themselves look better. They reek of desperation and appear petty and pathetic. Tired of the show and hope the bad managers are out.

Come over to HSE or EMC and you will see the absolute worst behaviors.

Around 2010 at a seminar on behaviour in the work place, several common personality types were identified - Leaders, Technocrats, Conflict Avoiders and ...... Sociopaths.

Sociopaths thrive in prisons and also do very well as swindlers in invester-funded businesses.

I think the Chevron after this change will be filled with sociopaths, particularly at the higher PSGs.

I have heard of several of the "connected" mangers retiring and I believe they are being forced out. No one voluntarily gives up a position of power while making $300,000+ a year and attending meetings all day for a job. I believe this time around the ELT is gleaning out some of the overpaid "yes" men/women. Unfortunately, they cannot get all of them or there will not be enough managers left. I think there will be a lot of adjustment pains in the new org for the management teams.

@dy+1jqd2key9 just described at least 40% of the Chevron workforce.

What we all are about to witness is who is really connected and who isn't. I suggest that you'll be surprised, amazed and demoralized at who is staying and who gets the boot. My experience tells me that they always favor a manager over lower levels and will do anything possible to keep them around. I've seen them create slots where they are still managers and manage no one. The system isn't fair nor is the playing field even. Be prepared for the worst. Good luck to all.

OP’s post really resonates.

I cannot divulge details, as much as I would love to expose this POS manager, but he tried to sabotage my manager by giving claiming that my boss was doing something wrong. I know, could I be any more vague, right? Well, suffice it to say that the POS’s claims were completely unfounded, but the damage, I fear, is done. I don’t know what my manager did, if anything, as follow up to defend his reputation. The POS manager has a habit of exhibiting self-serving, aggrandizing behavior, and unfortunately people don’t always see through the gargantuan piles of bullsh-t that this guy sells (all while purporting to be a Christian, which really makes me want to vomit, as nothing in this buffoon’s behavior suggests that he follows Christ’s teachings, but that’s a whole other conversation). In any case, my point was that bad behavior is, indeed, seeping into the workplace, with people like this POS manager jockeying for position. I can only hope that karma catches up to him.

My former PDCE boss got downgraded into an individual contributor role. I imagine it was quite the humbling experience. I was moved to different area. My current boss is lovely and genuinely seems to care about people. So I think everything turned out for the better in the end. However, here we are again. I did not take the AEOI and no one pressured me to take it and no one asked if I took it until after decisions on it came out.

@cj+1jqd2key9 agree- my manager was telling people they should take the AEOI even after the HR email said no one has the right to ask. How did things end up for you? My manager is after everyone’s job including mine. I wouldn’t be surprised if these managers are the ones to stick around. Who am I going to tell- and it wouldn’t change anything but put a bigger target on my back

All it takes are some knee pads and a tonsillectomy to snag one of those positions. Too bad real experience and skill isn't always valued.

You should be more concerned about this behavior directed at you from people that consider you competition for available jobs. I had this happen to me from my own boss during the PDCE acquisition. The dude was lazy, not well liked due to some behavior issues, but generally tolerable until the real list of jobs came out.

I'm a fairly quiet person, generally keep to myself, and just try to always put the best quality work out as I can. However, as soon as my former boss realized there were only so many jobs available and that I was his direct competition, he made every effort to squash my self confidence, intimate, and manipulate me as well as others. It was to the point that he was telling my PDCE PDR that I wasn't capable of doing anything despite him literally dotting on my abilities before the acquisition was ever announced. My PDCE PDR could see there was something off and even asked HR on my behalf about how to proceed but there apparently was a lot of the same going around in other departments and ultimately the behavior continued.

The point is, try to ignore the noise. People's true colors are going to come out soon for those that are desperate to stay. All you can do is hope that the people making the decisions already see the people in their true form and cut those awful personalities from the company. The odds are that if they're awful during this process, they were likely awful beforehand and have a reputation for it.

You get to see all the back st@b-bing at its finest. Saw it the last go around. After they secure their spot (because they are part of the good ol system) they go on to tell you how much they care about you and blah blah blah. They can make one of those reality shows out of all of this. You got this spot on! We really don’t need a lot of these cl@wns. Unless of course the company likes making people miser@ble.
