Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Jingle Shell, Jingle Shell

My hope for 2026 is that Shell finally sticks with a reorg and gives it proper time to play out. No more knee-je-k layoffs and asset sales every 6-12 months. If you have to change course that often you don’t know what you’re doing.
Could also work on staff appreciation and driving the share price up but I won’t hope for that much.

@py in the past it was arrogance of IT to ignore business needs when run from the West. Now it's run from the East and lack of skills is the cause.

Best to Source IT operations because it is commodity and bloated in Shell, just count the Jg1 and letter categories to keep the lights on. Including a bunch of architects and compliance monkeys.

Better keep investing in product development sitting close with the business that make dollars.

And be agile meaning get projects done in months, not years to keep up with the market.

Proof me wrong

@nt

what is an “agile IT process”

read what you replied to again and think about it

i said - HRs only business value is reducing liability and all else is a cost

in other words, HR IS doing its job. it is using as little money as possible to do its real job and nothing else.

now, keep in mind, this is how the entire thread seems to want IT to work. where all it does is the minimum for bottom dollar and every other request or service is ignored as you are thrown into chatbot he-l

you will get a laptop and nothing else

@k6 no, shell has slow and non agile systems and processess. they will never be able to adopt to AI at the core. Because people, processes and tools cannot absorp this disruption. Only if Wael fires the legacy he can built a lean and mean IT org. Save 1BlN cost by finding a partner to run IT 70% cheaper and 80% faster/leaner.

The only ones stopping this are the ones losing their IDT kingdom. But it will happen once Wael finds out through Mckinsey. JG1 and JG2 sitting comfortabely playing senior AI leader will need to find other ways to pay off their mortage somewhere in the nex few years.

Given my experience with them, HR could be axed entirely. When I’ve asked for their input on staffing issues they’ve been slow to respond or MIA entirely. As far as I’m concerned, their “value” is when my boss asks if I’ve contacted HR about a matter, I can say “yep” and we move on.

@k2

money will be spent on ai services. this is necessary to avoid falling behind.

it’s cheaper and more sustainable when it’s from an internal SME than a consultant

so it’s wrong to say “it costs money so we shouldn’t do it” and right to say “how do w e get these services cheaply and sustainably”

keep in mind that legal and HR are also nothing but costs. their “value” is only in preventing liability issues. everything is not about direct dollars.

@gd I still see so many blsht titles with AI from IDT folks in LinkedIn still working in Shell. So definitely bloated, how much money does IDT make? Just a cost center not helping the stock price in any way.

Also the whole grc/irm/compliance is bloated under the CISO. Too,much money being wasted checking the checkers.

Only reason I care and post here is to get better price for my shell stocks. It is still sadly low

@fs true. Overstaffed and with incompetent leadership engulfed in a turf war whoever wins gets to shape the department. Are we this? Are we that? Ridiculous and out of touch

@fs

they had a cull last may, last august, and will have another one some time after being absorbed into the businesses

are you sure you work here? is that not enough for you? 3 times a year instead of 2 perhaps?

Not before IDT have a cull hopefully, ridiculously overstaffed with analysts that watch other departments work and PMs who can’t run a project.

Only contractors can do the work. Good competent staff already left with or without a package to boost their carreer and life.

Shell leadership is only powerpoint and Excel hero's.

Contractors beware and always have a contingency plan....

I think the problem is that we have whole teams taking "fresh looks" at things that will not work. The cuts in a reorganization should be radical, cutting people and unecessary work to truly make us lean.

...but we always run into managers with no technical skills trying to save "their people" because they organized a really fun team away day.

It has only just begon, just a trading company will be left. Shell will own no assets.
