I’m still at Dell, but it’s getting harder to feel good about it. I've noticed that layoffs have become so routine they barely make a ripple anymore. It’s like trimming headcount is now simply baked into the business plan. How can this work as a long-term strategy?

Dell is not a decent company. Its management is filled with psychopaths and sociopaths.
This is called rationalizing and relativism. I mean, everything is decent if you are willing to overlook most of the flaws. The "mostly peaceful protest" crowd
The Pinto wasn't half bad if you can get over the exploding gas tanks, right? It had good fuel economy, great dynamics, cockpit visibility, sporty theme.
One thing I noticed while at dell is the pervasive lack of ambition in its staff.
@dw Dell IS a decent company if you are with the right org, have a good manager, enjoy your job and like the people you work with.
Yes, there are absolutely cr-ppy things about Dell but EVERY company has it's downfalls. I definitely have some major complaints about dell but at the end of the day, I'm happy where I'm at and have very few complaints.
The grass isn't always greener on the other side, basically. There is no "perfect" job or "perfect" company.
Layoffs are part of every company. Most companies reintroduced RTO far earlier than dell did. I will say dell underpays and as of now, for some reason refuses to promote anybody within the US but, idk...
I'm going to go against the grain here...
I actually LOVE my job and every single thing about it. My manager is the best I've ever had in my life, the job and people I work with are amazing. I've been here for roughly 6 years now and while I hate the CONSTANT layoffs, I do feel like my position/department/org along with being in Federal has shielded us from layoffs. (And no, I am not in sales or any of the sort.)
My biggest complaint as of now is the lack of promotions and obviously the RTO bs. Other than that? I'm happy as a camper.
Michael is doing whatever he can to increase his net worth. None of us know if that is selling off CSG, doubling down on selling GPUs, or just lowering OPEX. You can be certain that he isn't doing anything he thinks will hurt him though. It is and will always be 100% about Michael. He wants you #allin with Dell, but will think nothing of destroying everybody's livelihoods if it helps him.
It will really hit you after you leave and join a decent company.
the strategy is keeping the lights on. that's it. nothing more.
It’s a strategy of desperation. If your revenue is flat, your management su-ks, they have no ideas or reject other ideas they’re just not going to get it done.
At the end of the day Dell is a terrible place to work and is dying. Milk it.
You assume there is an actual strategy.
It seems like Dell has assumed the Agile form of management. Or as it used to be called; “Winging it”
