Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Do you think severance packages will be worse (less generous) for future layoffs?

I imagine if Verizon makes the severance amount too low, employees will refuse to sign the severance agreement and then try and sue Verizon. I am sure Verizon wants it to where people sign the severance agreement and thus laid off employees can’t sue.

@d5 they could do worse. There is no federal legal requirement to pay severance at all. The company does this to try to mitigate lawsuits. As far as I know only NJ requires one week's pay per year of service. So theoretically, VZ could drop the severance to 1 weeks' pay and still meet that requirement.

@dq it's already capped at 35 weeks for b6 and below and has been for years.

They are also capping the severance at 35 weeks, many very tenured employees are being short changed.

@d5
Unfortunately you're wrong. 2 weeks per year served is far from "bare minimum". IBM had that until 2016, when they reduced it to 3 months notice and one month's severance. That's 16 weeks regardless of how long you've worked. Companies are fully within their rights to do this (for non-contract employees) and it's my fear VZ will do this at some point.

They’re already the bare minimum, 2 weeks per year of service. They can’t do any worse.

The next layoffs will be low performers fired for cause. No package.

@a4 for sure. RTO five days a week is a GREAT tactic to get people to quit on their own

The heavily rumored 5-day RTO mandate is just layoffs in disguise, a pressure tactic designed to push people out without triggering a public meltdown or severance packages.

Expectations are quietly reserved for “critical roles,” while the rest are left to read between the lines.
