Thread regarding 3M layoffs

3M Germany Layoffs

The rumor on the street is that Germany will be hit with a 30% reduction in force. Can someone local or from EMEA confirm?

I am sorry Germany is going thru this, they have some amazing people. Some are not as good, as with all people, things vary on an individual level. In my experience, most of them are:

  • Reliable
  • Punctual
  • Efficient
  • Disciplined
  • Precise
  • Methodical
  • Blunt
  • Literal
  • Rigid or Inflexible
  • Strict Written Rule Followers

Lower. Cost. Country.

Germany is great but not inexpensive nor flexible.

I had a good experience with my German R&D colleagues too. No complaints.

@aq

Odd. I found my German colleagues very easy to work with and eager to collaborate. Over many years. Maybe it was different depending on what organization. So not indicative of the whole country.

Or, maybe you're just hard to work with. Ever think of that?

More and more orgs are rolling LATAM and APAC headcount directly into their SG&A. This allows for a more favorable SG&A as a % of sales when sales don’t increase. The expectation is everyone is global and the jobs can be done anywhere. However, these types of moves tend to be short-sighted and create operational execution deficiencies later. This reeks of a short term CEO chasing stock price gains and a near-term exit. It also hurts the long-term outlook of 3M staying together. It is already just 3M-in-name-only

I think that BB is sick of deal with works councils and, you know, employees that have reasonable labor and employment protections.

@av That comment makes sense if efficiency isn’t something you encounter very often.

@OP Surprised it would be that high given Germany’s works council and social plan requirements. From a process point of view the UK is usually the cleaner and faster option for reductions. Would be interested to hear from anyone local in DE/EMEA if there’s confirmation.

@a5 Curious if you have additional details? I know personally that 3M Germany colleagues are very hard to collaborate with. Very different from our UK colleagues.

The unofficial but very strongly encouraged strategy right now is that we should hire external candidates from LATAM countries whenever possible.

Some applicants are good, others not so much. But when the criteria we're judging them is limited exclusively to the lowest salary they're willing to accept suddenly they all look great.
