Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

I told my mgr I was close to retiring

No set date, but sometime in the next 6 months. The strategy bet is that if they think I’m leaving in the near future, they’ll be less likey to rif me now. The straws have been grasped at!

@dg they will RIF you because they won’t feel as bad. Jump starting your retirement with your severance.

I told my manager i was retiring the end of 2025. I got rifd in september. I got 6 months of severance. If i would have left on my own in December, i would have missed out on 3 months pay.

Former teammate of mine who had a great relationship with our manager had a private conversation (that he told us about later) prior to one of the last rounds. He basically volunteered to go onto the list and he was put on it. I've never seen someone so happy - he was going to retire anyway, and ended up with max severance and was smiling the whole way out the door. We were all happy for him and thanked him since we knew that one of us would have been gone if he had not done that.

100% you are on the list now but at least you'll leave with severance.

@OP so you told your manager you are leaving anyway. If I'm the manager, you go straight on the list.

You are playing it wrong

Not a good strategy..your manager knows that they can't replace your HC when you leave since replacement reqs are non existent.

Huh?

The best outcome for you would be to be RIF'd right before you retired anyway, that way you get the severance payout as a going away present. (It's the most thanks you'd get.)

We had people from my team RIFed in September who had hinted at retiring

Got news for ya, genius -- By letting your boss know that you plan to retire in months, you've just dramatically increased your chance of getting RIF'd now! After all, if you're leaving anyway, why should he keep you around? Better to retain some guy who plans on being here a longer time.

…or, if management had a heart, they would put you on the list to save another employee who might have been on the list.
