Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

MW's AI goose chase

MW and JG talking about AI like it's going to change their world.

Maybe it is. We see it in other parts of the world, part of people's day to day. It takes talent, and the talent is leaving.

If I had to guess, the average PSG of the AI team is probably not higher than 22.
All the people working on the data have also exited the company because of the BS and lack of confidence in our completely disconnected leaders.

JG and LC would rather spend tens of millions of dollars on BCG and McKinsey or EY rather than just pay a fraction of that to retain the talent that was here.

The world's best AI practitioners are not dinosaurs like the consultants with MBAs that JG and LC are bringing in. and the ENGINE strategy for AI is a fantasy at best. It's sad that these leaders have completely neutered what was a team with good talent.

No one wants to work for these puppets guided by management consultants who have practically zero experience in AI. If you're using the same consultants who have been here over a decade or two, what are the chances that they know what they're doing?

@2vq BCG orchestrated all of this. Move all of the people with actual AI/ML expertise down a few rungs, and bring in more managers and technical advisors with zero data science and AI knowledge and experience.

The org chart that JG sent out last week pretty much made no sense. You go from a fairly nimble delivery team to one with a ton of overhead. I’m sure scrum masters and RTEs and agile coaches are next to join the org.

EAI is crawling with incompetent BCG people trying to do VCO.

At first I thought they were just doing stupid project management stuff, but I just found out that they were trying to develop solutions.

JG has completely run AI/ML into the toilet.

When everyone quits and all he has is BCG.. in the end, it’s the same outcome.

Maybe AI won't change the world but if it helps cut more of the unless deadwood at Chevron, particularly those who whine on this site all day, it will be doing us a favor.

@fv he’s the the head of Agile. Smooth talker who hasn’t delivered anything of real value in at least 5 years

@eg i've never heard about MA's blockchain history. are you hallucinating.
his only f up is triple crown, but not sure that was his choice. KC and JU pretty much forced it upon him. From the FLT, one could argue that AG and KB helped deliver that tu-d to him as well.

@f1 who is CS and what does he have to do with AI

@f1 the current leaders can’t do anything other than talk, which is why IT has gone even more to sh-t than it was a year ago. They’ve completely lost touch with the actual work that gets done. If you’re more than 5 years from retirement, have a backup plan.

@eg Well, MA sc--wed up just about everything he touched, but talks a good game. His average role is < 12 months. AI or not, he is the future of CVX IT.

Along with other IT leaders like CS and JL, who are of a similar breed, this type of baffling dedication to people that once appeared on a Future Leader is partly why Chevron’s future is bleak.

I got at least 10 years left working under these id--ts. I guess I could jump, but too much vested at this point. Leaders like them are truly demoralizing.

@en

she was doing the same thing at shell. people from india seem to only want work with and hire people from india. its their top priory. she flew there on the company dime constantly.

you can count the days until you are severed in director from the ethnicity of your leadership team. and nobody even cares lol. you’re likelier to get called racists for noticing than for anything to ever be done. truly pathetic culture we have in the states now, perhaps we deserve this. trump won’t help at all, his VP is and the admins billionaire friends love the money they think they’re saving by outsourcing.

Matt A. used to tell folks that blockchain would revolutionize our company. It didn’t. He was completely wrong. He got promotion after promotion. People think that smart and informed people move up the ladder? Nope… it’s people that play the game.

@d0 Over thirty-five years of experience in capturing real time operational and performance data within context. Spent the last fifteen building systems within BUs to collect this quality data only to find myself laid off last year. Chevron management does not have a clue what skills are needed for the upcoming technology shift, what progress and success in this space looks like, or even what they are doing. I was happy to leave and take a healthy severance with me, but I feel sorry for those left behind with such a rudderless organization. Good luck to you all.

there is no AI at scale without ample clean data and no I have no idea why they’re wasting their money on other “initiatives”

100% correct about the data limitations to AI implementation. Chevron has never been good about curating and archiving data: No for active fields and certainly not for legacy (now abandoned) assets. It is this type of work, integrated data and reservoir models, that could be the basis for AI learning, but is now all but lost in the fog of disorganization.

changes are coming that will accelerate delivery for AI. Unfortunately the data will still be the limiting factor and there is zero vision by the new GM.
