Getting cut would force me to take a hard path. But often times the hard path is needed to continue avoiding complacency. I've always been on the fence about the usefulness of my job. I am a small cog on a giant machine that keeps the machine turning. If my job goes away, you can't keep the machine straight, but you won't notice it bcz the work I do only straightens the machine by 1 degree. Its the combination of losing many small cogs that the machine will struggle to stay on track.

The really smart people here say you'll be hired back as a contractor at a higher salary. We should all love this plan!
In the past during Cost, people got laid off. Then in 6-9 months they were hired back on as contractors at higher pay, but lower salary burden. That doesn't sound like efficiency to me! The work never disappeared. We tried to do more with less, but people can only do so much in a day's time.

I am the OP. The responses on here are funny.
First one. ConocoPhillips is a horrible company, but I can't leave because the salary and benefits are so good.
Second one. Anyone who listens to the company plans is a victim of propaganda. This is about efficiency - nobody is out to get you unless you are a person that does not add value.

@d8 Luckily I haven't had to job search in 15 years. . . . . hopefully this won't be my year to start. For all the bad here at COP, there is lots of good that is easy to overlook. . . . stability, salary, benefits, retirement, etc
@d2 lots of fake job postings out there, data gathering, companies ghost applicants after interviews. Actually try out the job market and then report back.

Just curious, why do you say the job market is stuff of nightmares now? Seems to be opportunity out there. May be hard to get the same salary, but employment seems easy to find given the accessibility of LinkedIn now and its centralized use in business.
