Thread regarding Cigna layoffs

New PTO Policy

Cigna is no longer paying out your unused PTO which is a convenient way to lower the cost of laying off employees. The trade off is that you do not have to pay back PTO that has not been earned.
Main takeaway is If you are leaving on your own take your full year of PTO (even if it is only January) or move to a state where they have to legally pay you your PTO.

What are the different salary bands at Cigna and how much PTO do they get?

I retired and was informed you only get pto accrued. You no longer get your full pto for the year.

No longer allowing carryover of 56 hours. I've done this every year to account for potential STD (having had a major illness several years back).

"People who carry over 56 hours typically carry it over to the next year as well." Um, duh - we're trying to plan for your policy of funding the first 7 days of STD with PTO.

Maybe now you should only require that the first 24 hours of STD is funded with PTO.

Are they planning so many layoffs in 2026 that it will bankrupt the company if they had to pay out the PTO those people earned in addition to their severance? Or are they planning to PIP a ton of out of the company by then and looking to pay literally nothing when they throw all those employees out on the street? From what I've heard, that last one might be the plan. Never heard of as much documentation of employee actions as there is this year!

There is also now no PTO limit for band 6+. Kind of a weird choice. That’s not a good look even if they don’t end up taking any more time off because they already had a lot of PTO.

"I use all my PTO anyway. I get 28 days a year and would never consider rolling any."

I, I, I, me, me,me.

Oh, what a wonderful world we'd have if everyone else was just more like you. Cause you have it all figured out, huh?

Absolutely! Emergencies never happen so no need to plan for them. Fantastic insight.

Not only have the stopped paying unused PTO when you leave, they also reduced the rollover from 7 days (56 hours) to 3 days (24 hours) if you stay.

That’s wild, thank goodness I don’t live in a state that allows that. How is that even legal, these states have to step it up

With VERY few exceptions, giving 2 weeks notice will have you escorted out the door the same day.

Cool, the math checks out! Otherwise you give them 2 weeks - then they don't pay for the two weeks of PTO you earned. So, showing up actually costs you money.

To this poster
“Yes - unless, of course, you are above Band 5. Then you'll get a full payout of any unused balance.“

False news. No pto for band 6 and above. Expectations is work get done.

And definitely don't give 2 weeks notice if you leave.
