so, why is there so much H1B at Dell, or even in other countries, when there are a ton of US based workers that have been laid off. I thought the purpose of H1B is to use folks from other countries when there aren't enough qualified US people to do the same job. I think in this current economy, we have moved beyond that. We have plenty of qualified US workers to do the jobs being done by H1B workers here in the US. I feel H1B is being abused and not used for its intended purpose. Companies are using it for cheap labor. I'm willing to be that there are plenty of laid off US workers that would be do the same job for the price they're paying the H1B people. Seems like we need to make a shift in this now changing landscape.

Well, Dell is certainly guilty of this. So many times India workers are moved to the US for roles that an American could, and should easily fill. One particular Indian VP in the Operations (Dundas') group does it all the time, or has his Indian Sr. Directors/Directors do it. And they do not know what they are doing at all. And a couple of people who used the so-called "anonymous" Ethics Complaint system, were let go after they complained. Hires and promotions are nearly all only for Indian people, while non-Indians ar downsized. Definitely needs to be reported and investigated!

And now when companies don't comply, "he" is having the US government buy enough shares in those companies to have a voice, and force them to comply. THis is Communism, pure and simple! A few days ago someone on our team resigned because of H1B visa policies. I don’t know the exact details, but it looks like the administration is making it tougher for H1B holders to stay in the U.S.

But here’s the reality: the U.S. has plenty of workers, yet not enough qualified ones. The real issue is education—it’s expensive here compared to the rest of the world. Until that changes (and it probably won’t), there’ll always be a talent gap.
As for outsourcing, there’s no official word yet. But if I were Dell, I’d seriously reconsider. Geopolitical tensions are growing fast in today’s interconnected financial system. @r2 totally agree. In fact you aren’t supposed to be hiring people on visas if you are laying people off and not displacing them. But that’s a BS game that Dell is great at playing.
Let's face it - we all know what country we're talking about here. Every time I have been in a hiring mode for my department, I'd get hundreds of resumes from students, current H1B holders, and those who wanted to move here. The resumes were all almost identical! Every student claimed the same university, the same Senior Project, and the same University Award. Everyone else claimed the exact same work experience. They all worked for TATA Motors and/or for a particular "Consulting firm" (I forget the name), and again - had the same projects, positions, and "awards." And there is no way to verify anything on their resume.
Then, the ones that do get hired and/or moved here, know nearly nothing about what they claimed to be an expert in. And the ones hired into Management positions, do nothing but hire more of the same, and moving more to the U.S. Then they get here and have their entire extended family come to "visit" on tourist visas, and then they just stay here after the visa runs out. Funny we never hear of them being caught and deported. Oh, that's right - the USA VP's wife is from the same country! All ICE would have to do is show up at almost any of the Austin area Costco's on a Saturday around lunch time, and they could round them all up at any of the free snack stands.
How many H1B holders have been let go from Dell this year? HAven't seen, or heard of ANY. In fact, the only person of India ancestry that I know of who got let go was a young woman who was born and raised here - a UT Grad from about 7 years ago. She got let go in the past few months. And she was a great performer! Anything to "balance the numbers" so it doesn't look like it's all old white Americans getting cut. I imagine HR has charts of all of this to stay JUST legal.
Simple solution: any company that has layoffs should be barred from hiring H1B workers for 2 years.
Unlike individuals who enter the country without legal authorization, H-1B visa holders come through official immigration channels and contribute by paying taxes and participating in the economy
I've worked with some very talented people who are here on H1B's. They come over here legally and work for a paycheck.
Here is the worst about H1B’s. Once they get in to some position, especially a management one all they’ll do is bring their family and friends over to take those roles. I’ve seen it done so many times and they absolutely fail. Then everyone needs to reset and start over.
I’m glad that the US administration is cracking down on H1B and visas in general. To many Americans have lost their jobs over cost.

The White guys I worked with in our business teams were hired because they were friends of the manger. They had no clue how a server works. He talked well, but had no content. The manager was hired because he was a veteran 30 yrs ago. Ultimately, the job never got done , so product never sold and we saw multiple teams wiped out in subsequent lay offs due to my team member's incompetent decisions.

The H-1B visa program mandates that employers pay H-1B workers at least the prevailing wage for their specific job in the geographic location, ensuring they don't undercut the wages of their American counterparts. So Dell isn’t saving any money with these foreign workers.

My first encounter with H1B1's was at Dell. The young inexperienced engineer was so scared of loosing his job and work status that he made poor decisions. I tried to mentor him into working in a calm, calculated manner. His project was poorly designed and violated several industry specs. At one point he told me I needed to work weekends getting our lead suppliers product to work in his system. I tried to explain the suppliers product meets industry spec, works in thousands of products and millions have been shipped, the problem is your system and it needs to change. Finally I told him I'm not a slave, I can leave Dell tomorrow. They tried to go to production and it fail in the factory. I was called back from Christmas vacation to fix the issue. I had to explain to upper management the problem. There was only 2 choices on fixing it, either redesign or crank the speed back to gain more margin. The decision was made to crank the speed back and it worked. I was given a large bonus for my work. Learned many people let problems slide and when it blows up they ride in on the white horse to save the day inorder to collect a large bonus.
Years later that product was part of root cause analysis class. However what was presented as the problem was BS which was supplied to senior management from upper management. I stated such in the class and was not given credit for attending.
It was eye opening experience.
@ay : we all know that all of the H1b have dual income with the lowest salary holder's household income if minimum of $350 base salry Plus RSU ANNUALLY. Add to that the income from rentals and "side hustles" of youtube channels run inthe name of their parents in india. THe net worth of h1b having lived for 6 yrs in USA is nothing less tht $5 million. Any type of marriage is done looking at the income the spouse can earn.. Even if you are laid of, you switch to B1/B2 and extend it for years until you get another job.
You dont need any "unemployment". You can easily retire in india any time you want.

It’s a scam allowing companies to hire people who take less than American workers. These companies spend big bucks on lobbyists in dc.
With all the downsizing, I feel like the colleagues on H1B are backed into a corner and as a consequence the most likely to do whatever it takes to survive including backstabbing and ethically questionable behavior. If you’re a citizen and lose your job it’s rough but there is family and some minimal support like unemployment. If you’re H1B you’re moving back to India unless you find another sponsor in 1-2 months, which is close to impossible.
It was a conscious and deliberate decision made by the leadership team as a way to higher profits. You have to remember that when Dell went on its Indian hiring run the stock was in the toilet and now look at where it's at, and the peak it hit.
Dell (the company) has always made money, not from revenue, but from financial leveraging. A quarter of a century ago it was all about cash conversion. The past 10-15 years, low salary H-1B visa hirings. The latest trick is A.I., which will see the company hit a brick wall.

write your congress person. H1B visas are no longer needed for tech. we encourage our young people to pursue STEM, and for what? there are no jobs available for them.
H1b Program was meant for those y2k error correction. It was supposed to be temporary. The lawmakers encouraged by Lobbyists extended this program for the benefit of businesses. Seeing this loophole, many mediocres and scammers from many countries came in. Now as citizens, they are struggling to pivot and find jobs.

It's simple. For companies It's very easy to squeeze H1B slaves to the absolute limit. They know they'll work 24/7 just for the sake of staying in the US and prospects of bringing their whole family over.
