So, I worked for Sears until 2015, right before sears started the closure of many stores, all stores had to complete the same inventory on the same day, and that had never happened before, all stores had to do home and garden, then automotive, then shoes, but all at the same time. Now Belk is doing this. Does anyone think this is unusual? Are they getting their ducks in a row for closures? then the post about surprise visits next month also raises red flags.

OP is stating fake news. I worked at Sears from 2005 through 2020 in the Western Region and LA District. We never ever did inventory on the same day as all the other stores. It always varied by stores within our district and region because RGIS always did our inventories.
Hours are always drastically cut after inventory. They’ll work you till you drop, then good luck paying bills until mid-March.

Might be closures but probably not the entire company just like Sears. There are still a couple of Sears stores today. I don't think the coordinated inventory day of Sears indicated that closures were coming. Sure a bunch closed but the waves of closure took place over several years and weren't immediately following inventory.
Burlington Stores does their inventory in a coordinated fashion and their doing pretty well.
