If this is your first time

First time to go through a down cycle? It isn't fun, and usually happens at least once each decade.
Some people posting on this message board seem to have never been through this before and probably are new employees.

Everyone saw this one coming. Tariffs just made it happen faster. OPEC turning on the spigot made it happen faster. But it was coming anyway - it always does.

Then in 5 years from now, we'll be back at 100bbl.

I got in o&G in 2012 when the prices were flying high. Then 2015 came and the bottom fell out. It was carnage for 2-3 years after. Don’t know how I survived but I made it. Glad I set up my dividend income to not have to depend on a W2.

33 year career, now retired. My rule of thumb was every 5-6 years there’d be a catharsis.

If you look in the parking lot there are a lot of Mercedes, BMW and Lexus vehicles. That tells you something about the reward side of the deal. There’s a risk side too.

I was part of a layoff group in my career. It happens. Like the line in The Godfather, “it’s only business.” You might be anywhere on the performance spectrum: if chairs are pulled away when the music stops, if your work group takes a hit, it very likely isn’t personal.

You may or may not be able to influence whether you’re one of the people who gets asked to leave. You certainly can influence your impact on your colleagues and yourself at this time. My counsel is to be positive about your work and to not be afraid to take risks - not to hide in your office, and certainly not to run others down in the hope that they look bad next to you. If this is your first time and you want to stay in this industry, it won’t be your last time. If you do the best you can you’ll have nothing to reproach yourself for.

Once a decade? Over my career more like 3-4 times per decade (at least that many layoffs, sometimes we have had more than one layoff in a single downturn). Just remember, today's downturn is tomorrow's bo-m. We lose staff, quit drilling wells, drilling companies idle rigs and production drops and prices rise starting the cycle again. It's occurring at a higher frequency with unconventional oil being the driving force.

Don’t try to predict who will be gone. Some are obvious. Others have no clear business case. Personal bias always places a part. Best to get your affairs in order and start saving any documents and files you may want to bring with you.

It should also be said, starting a union or complaining about our executives wont make any difference to what is coming.
The whole industry is going through the cycle - and has nothing to do with any of the industry C-suite or whether you have or don't have a union.
What the C-suite is responsible for is the actions we take to make it through this period of time.

I know several, including myself, that do a lot for the business but that doesn't mean you have the right of passage to keep working here.

I agree with the person who posted this. People are acting like they have never been through a layoof cycle. For you younger folks-Understand that these sorts of layoffs are common. Don't let it impact your attitudes and behaviors.

A company doesn't owe you anything. It's unfortunate to see many of the older engineers, geos, and technical staff acting so negative and awful towards their colleagues. Stop jocking for position.

Be an example and do better.

If you are so unhappy then leave. Your griping and negativity speaks more about your character than it does the people you trash and gossip about.

Optimistic opinion about the future in 5 years.
This one is different. The world is different. Better to brace for a longer, lower future with more reliance on AI and less US-centric global economy. We’re witnessing history in the making and it doesn’t look bright for our industry or our country.
