I'm sick of RTO

I know this has been beaten to the ground but I'm venting and am questioning how harshly anyone is even paying attention to RTO...

I'm so tired of driving a solid hour to the office every single day, wasting gas and paying $20 a week on TOLLS only to be there for a few hours... With ONE other person on my team. I'm spending about $100 a week just to go to work and sit on fkn virtual calls I can do at home while dealing with dogshit WiFi. If I lived 15 mins away I wouldn't care about it tbh; but I drive 80 miles a day + gas + tolls + unnecessary car mileage to do sh-t I can do at home.

I took my computer to tech central last week because I hadn't used it in years - a test machine - and they told me Dell took all the LAN wires, switches and routers out for LAN connectivity as they never planned on having anyone RTO... Yet, here we are.

Being forced to work in half baked offices with not enough docks or desks, being forced to park half a mile away from your building, INSANE cafe prices for food that is sub-par at best - and most is bought from freakin HEB (grocery store) lol.. all while raises are comical and promotions are non existent.

I love my job and unfortunately rely on those paychecks so, I'll be a good peon and go in

That's why I tell people that Michael Dell was honest and serious about remote work. I came into the offices during the pandemic and witnessed the massive changes. Cubes were taken out and replaced with sparse open space seating.

The open space seating was to serve the few people who may on occasion need to come into the office. But then around spring 2023 they started removing the open space seating and re-installing the cubes. It was at that moment that I felt they would make people RTO.

We are living in a world where mountains of money have been invested into making things like remote work possible.

When we go into the office to just sit in virtual calls, then yes, we are going to complain.

I get INFINITELY more work done in my home office. It's not even close.

Get with the times, you golden oldies boot lickers. :)

I accepted a 3 days in office position after my contract was up. Then covid hit and everyone went full remote for 4-5 years. 4 months before they implemented RTO we were told by our execs that they don't see us ever going back to office; so i signed a new lease in an area I wanted to be in. I was 10-15 minutes from the office prior to this, so I moved back to Westlake thinking I'd be remote forever...

a few months later they (Dell) decides to force a 5 day RTO into place and now I'm stuck with an hours drive. I would have stayed put had I known they would do this but they chose to fk a lot of people over wi--y nillly and for no good reason.

As for the tolls? Sure I don't HAVE to use them but $20/week isn't breaking the bank so whatever. Nor is the gas but it's the principal of the thing. Spending 2 hours/day driving to an office to join virtual meetings, with nobody to "collaborate" with; a pathetic cafeteria that is now charging 2x more than pre-covid, and the simple fact that dell was 3 days in office and 2 at home for YEARS prior to covid..

Don't even get me started on the parking and desk situation...

Ultimately though, I do value my job and unlike a lot of people here, actually LOVE my job... but the company is dogshit. I abide by the policy and go in more days than not but, I'm beginning to realize that they are using the RTO policy as a "fear" tactic moreso than a metric for xyz...

I've posted this a few times when RTO at Dell comes up. Yes, almost everyone at Dell was "in office" for many years. But, it was different in many ways:

  1. The population density at the buildings was much more reasonable. Folks had decent cubicles (36 sq ft of space, 6 foot walls for privacy). You had multiple locking cabinets and drawers, a trash can, a whiteboard, and usually a guest chair. Directors got double cubes at 70+ square feet and plenty of space to host impromptu semi-private meetings

  2. The cafeteria had 2x the options at 1/2 the price.

  3. Many areas were actually quiet enough and private enough for knowledge workers and people like finance who deal with sensitive data to actually work.

  4. When you left the office, there was no expectation to log on, continue working, answer emails or join evening calls.

We were in office for many years. Dell made the offices so much worse , then pulled everyone back in.

Nothing says progress like pioneering portable laptops and global communication systems to let people work from anywhere, only to put the genie back in the bottle and reverse all of your remote technological advancements.

Stay home. 80 miles isn't "about an hour" from the office if you don't take the toll roads. I had a similar discussion with HR when this RTO farce started. Or if you really want to drive in, leave earlier, take one of the non-toll roads, and save your $100. You can 100% get to the office without using the toll roads. People did it for years before the toll roads were built when way more people were working in Round Rock than today. You choose to pay the $100 a week for your convenience.

I'm in the same boat. 116 miles a day roughly 10% of my salary goes to transportation costs. Not to mention about 2-3 hours of driving a day. I Drive down to join virtual calls. I have started interviewing other places. I loved my job but this isn't sustainable.

No more commute, but no more income, either.
Scrambling to pay your basic bills, worrying about foreclosure/eviction, not having enough money for the car payment/insurance, a doctor's appointment, or to keep the lights on, or food on the table. This is the struggle many people are going through right now...do you want to join them to REALLY see what it's like to suffer in chronic uncertainty, desperately trying to cope, with zero money coming in?

Give that some thought, as you pack your own lunch from home to eat at work, instead of blowing money unnecessarily on "sub par at best" overpriced cafe food.

Use your brain, be honest about weighing the pros and cons about what really matters, and count your blessings, instead of cursing what you cannot control. It could ALL be taken away from you... what then?
