Thread regarding IBM layoffs

PIP’d this week - little warning, completely blindsided

Did anyone else get PIP’d this week? I heard there’s a bunch of us.

@e7 yes it is very deflating. Do all you can to recognize it is not you; it is IBM. As long as you are doing your best and giving it your all every day; all you can do is the best you can. If your mgr did it with compassion etc and perhaps hinted they had to hit a body and it was your turn and you will be ok (for another qtr), then that is 1 thing. But if they did it and you are in the bottom of the 9th and with 2 strikes on you, then just stop helping IBM and help yourself over the qtr etc trying to find a new job. It su-ks I know. Hopefully despite stock market all time highs etc and with the IT job market bad, things can only get better from here. I have seen this in my long career.

@c9 I am in software. I got the impression that this is a formality and they needed to tag someone, but it still feels like sh-t.

Nah, that's too good for the likes of him. He should be in one of those group grope showers where he can't help but keep dropping the soap bar.

Great analysis but it's too little too late. Pie in the sky. It's burn baby, burn.

Hope that someone reports Alvind and Krabanaugh to the US Labor and State Departments for laying off so many Americans from their jobs at IBM and transferring those jobs to Alvind's home country, India.

8000+ people impacted in a year is not a minuscule number. Laying off employees so you get a bigger annual bonus is hardly the patriotic thing to do as an American, is it Alvind? After all you have US citizenship (as a naturalized citizen) , don't you? It should be revoked. You need to be in El Salvador getting group shower therapy with Krabanaugh for all the things you have done to IBM employees in the US.

You can run but you cannot hide from the truth. Things have a way of catching up.

Welcome to the CFO’s view of IBM. Costs if eliminated drop to the bottom line. If IBM doesn’t grow 3-4% per year, costs must be eliminated. Currently IBM is growing 1-2% per year all centered around Enterprise upgrades and acquired SW. You don’t see many new mainframes coming on line, and certainly legacy SW is shrinking and being replaced via the acquired SW. This model doesn’t feed the bulldog when 160k of your employees work in consulting which is labor intensive. Thus cost reduction comes into play. What’s a CFO to do? You got it, reduce labor via PIP’s, layoffs, and AI automation and shift those costs savings to the bottom line. The net of this is consulting at IBM will shrink substantially over the next 2-3 years as IBM has to feed the 4% growth objective.

Agree, IBM is too big and has no future. Even worse now than when I was there years ago. Get out or slack off, but be prepared either way by updating your skills, or better yet getting new skills. IBM is a total fu--ing soul su---r.

Interested to know: 1. Your role/brand as best you can reveal. Did your boss hint it was just a formality since you are doing ok and they just needed to tag somebody as the PIP quotas roll down from the mountain. I have seen that where the boss HAS to PIP so if they hate you and you have now chance, they PIP you and run you out ASAP. If they like you and you have a shot at hitting a number, they PIP you to get the monkey off their back knowing you will pull out of the dive and survive (for another qtr).

IBM is like a Walmart store. Lots of stuff and cr-p on the shelves, and mostly on the floor, no one is around to help you, buying stuff is a hassle and takes too long, their service and support is a line of returns 15 long and takes 45 minutes. Both great companies back in the day now too big, too woke, too uncaring, too much eco chamber how how great they are...Get out now; there is no longer any future or career at IBM. Working at IBM is like the old toll collectors that got paid well, had pensions and now replaced by automated gantrys and transponders.

As most folks know, IBM is running dry and Alvind desperately needs his 2026 bonus before he checks out - he'll do anything (and I mean anything) to make his fake Q3 numbers even if it means taking lessons from Rob the Slob on the art of CS.

More layoffs and PIPS to follow for sure and hope the cuts get Alvind's Indian friends too. That is long overdue. And Trump's tariffs will cause a lot of heartburn everywhere.
