Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Spread the word at the upcoming HS graduations.

I was a mentor and tutor for math and sciences at a private high school for almost two decades. I encouraged students to investigate engineering at TAMU and UT and I think I helped.

Graduation is coming up in a few weeks. I won't mention it to the new grads, but I will tell all students already in college to look at this forum and adjust their career goals and choice of employers.

I know someone who works in a different industry and they said they would 100% not want to work in that industry

Agreed, steer your kids away from oil and gas. No matter your political leaning, it's a declining industry that will support fewer and fewer professionals, that trend is clear over the last 10 years. About the only career with long career potential is petroleum engineering, which TAMU shines at. Unfortunately, as all the ancillary fields supporting PE (basically, any geo-type job) start to wither away, PEs will become more and more isolated with little mobility either within or outside the oil industry.

@ch

“ the MAGA crowd will downvote this because it comes from one of America's most distinguished economists.”

Nope, I downvoted because I wouldn’t let Krugman near my kids. https://thehill.com/homenews/media/477482-paul-krugman-my-computer-was-hacked-to-download-child-po-nography/

I know someone at Baytown Maintenance who said exactly that. Tough and lots of late night phone calls.

OP here. I said "adjust their career goals and choice of employers."

Meaning no Petroscience or anything with Oil and Gas, Refining, or Chemicals. Those career paths are mature fields being outsourced overseas and talent will not be rewarded commensurately.

And no Chevron for obvious reasons.

I actually liked Exxon. It was hard, very competitive but satisfying and you had to play 100% by their rules. Had to be ultra sharp to advance up the ladder.

Nurse Practitioners in specialized fields get paid well.

Look. If you have Children just pray for them. A1 and robotics will take most livelihoods away within a decade. Honestly best to advise children to go into hospitality or nursing or other soft human touch livelihoods. Maybe a preacher is a good recommendation. They make a ton of money scamming the needy and there will be lots of needy as our world evolves on artificial/robotic path

This is hilarious… “ My neighbor worked at Exxon for 28 years and he said it was a horrible place to work.”

If it was a terrible place to work why stick around for 28 years LOL. Oh wait, probably the high salary which many companies have realized they can gladly get someone to do the job for much less and the same output.

I believe engineering is a great field but I would not tell my kids to work at chevron or Exxon. My neighbor worked at Exxon for 28 years and he said it was a horrible place to work.
Unfortunately the USA economy will continue to offshore any job that can be performed in a location with lower wages.
An Indian coworker in the USA said to me, “where will our kids work?” And he is correct ….

Smooth brain thinking right there, OP. STEM careers are as important as ever.

@a9

You sound like the “don’t vote” folks.

We need engineers in all fields, especially oil & gas. Don’t capitulate just because there’s a brief point in history where we’ve outsourced our talent to another country.

The company wants you to go away quietly!

Don’t do it! Let the world know how they did you… Let the world know how they did us! Go on and have a successful life, but tell the world your story! Not to overwhelm him… But small tidbits will be effective.

100%. I no longer encourage my kids to pursue engineering. Sad about it, but if we are just going to outsource it to India, why bother going into a dying career. Funny, the people doing this are engineers themselves.

My cousin is the counselor of the best high school in the Houston area. I’ll tell her to do the same.
