Should I be concerned as an incoming NCG?

Signed my intern return offer. Should I be concerned it may be resicended? Or I may be fired quickly out of school?

@f5 theres been a layoff every quarter for the last 6 quarters. They should have a hiring freeze but wont for whatever reason

If you are an NCG it might be worth calling your college's career center and discussing this with them once the severance period is over. Some colleges have a rule against companies letting go of their alumni within the year and will block the company from returning for a period.

@c1 that is a lot of underperforming. You are insinuating that the same number/count of people are let go all the time. Are the managers being held accountable for not developing their teams and also being deemed as underperforming?

@c1 lol, those labeled as low performers are typically labeled so because of office politics. As for ncgs find a good rhythm for work. This company will eat you alive if you are not careful and keep going above and beyond. The advancement will come but unless you're very good at the office politics you are not getting promoted any sooner.

@c1 I saw a cohort of NCGs walking out yesterday. So much for giving people a chance. I do kind of agree with you in general though. But you need to "work your a-s off" as a Director told me today.

I know bashing TI is the norm here, but can say from knowledge on this that the people let go from the business units are the clearly identified underperformers. NCGs are NOT being chucked out, nor are older employees just to save costs. Now, for internal functions (cost centers), some of those jobs are being moved overseas but that is no different from any other company in this market space. If you are an NCG and work hard and responsibility, you will always be well rewarded in TI.

Take the job. Perform your best. Plan to make Sr. Eng by year 8. If it doesn't look like it's going to happen, plan to leave by year 5. Btw- I hate that we refer to job grades. It's a purposeful terminology so workers won't obviously compare themselves to similar levels at other companies.

I interned in 2023 and started full time in 2024. Morale in RFAB for NCG equipment engineers/process engineers is really not good, especially after today. At the same time, if it's a job or no job, being a engineering NCG isn't the worst. Nice starting bonus, 4 weeks of TBK a year, good starting salary, profit sharing, etc. I am really exhausted though, despite me being really passionate about work. TI management needs to do better, I'm already seeing NCGs eyeing other jobs. And then what? You can't have safety/cost/quality with demotivated NCGs or no SMEs at all. Just look at CMP with Gene leaving. We've already been scraping more because of that knowledge gap.

@aa just want to reply to this person's comment and note that TI has done over a half dozen major layoffs in just over the past year and, given the current low starts and nearly nonexistent demand for our products, will likely continue them in the short- and mid-term future. Also, there's going to be an all fab pause for 2-3 weeks during the holiday season this year, which TI has not done in a very long time.

You will be worked to death. If it's your only option take it but don't fall for any long term RSU traps. Get the job and start looking for another job immediately in my opinion. 5 yrs at ti. Waiting for RSU in July and I'm bailing. Awful CEO and decision making.

@OP a warning, regardless, you will be coming in to a very low morale work environment upon entry. If you have leads in other areas that interest you I’d seriously consider them first.

I would encourage all NCGs not to take employment with this company. The company is very short term thinking and terribly mismanaged.

Micromanagement – managers don’t trust you to make decisions.
Unclear goals – priorities keep shifting without explanation.
Politics over performance – promotions and rewards seem based on favoritism.

These layoffs were so random can't understand what TI was thinking. First I thought it was the new employees then I thought it was the employees with PIP's. Walking in today they let go of young people still in college people with 200 plus time bank and left a 68 year old man that's already getting his social security check and that's in photo, then a 65-year-old woman saying she retiring in 2 months. Like wtf

I've witness NCG get laid off after 2-3 months of working here during the 2024 fall RIF. I would keep looking elsewhere. TI is not the place to be.

@OP As someone who has been around TI recruiting for a while, I wanted to chime in on the “should I be concerned as an incoming NCG” question.

TI has alway, and will continue to, hire new college graduates. It’s not something we just started doing recently; it’s a long-term strategy that has been part of our DNA for decades. If you’ve got an offer as an NCG, your offer is safe.

That said, you’ve got to do what makes the most sense for you and your future. Since you’re an intern conversion, you’ve already seen the culture and the group firsthand, which means you’re in the best position to evaluate if TI is right for you long-term.

Also, and as frustrating as it sounds, layoffs are not unique to TI. No company is completely immune. If you’re looking for a place that will never go through it, good luck, it doesn’t really exist. What I can confidently say is that layoffs tend to be more rare at TI compared to many companies, and the commitment to bringing in and developing top talent through our college programs remains very strong.

So bottom line: your offer is solid, but make the choice that feels right for your career path.

2 years ago I would have said not to worry. Today, I would keep your options open. I know a couple people who were just let go and only were with the company for ~1 year. I always hear that newer employees are more safe because they are less expensive but I've seen newer employees get let go or "encouraged" to leave the past couple years. Maybe my group is actually trying to keep our knowledgeable people but it's probably just random chance really.

Entirety of SFAB engineering/technician staff has been offered severance/furloughed after being given written advanced offers for new positions at other north Dallas fabs in the summer of 2024. Including all NCGs and veteran employees regardless of performance. ~200 employees

Some incoming NCGs had their offers rescinded. I wouldn't be overly concerned if yours wasn't, but I'd keep looking for other opportunities just in case

Typically NCGs are safe when it comes to layoffs — it’s due to the lower pay grade. Most people that I know who were laid off yesterday were senior-level individual contributors (who had been here 20+ years).
