Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Media

Why hasn't the media said anything about the never ending layoffs? Why hasn't anyone spoken to the media?

@db Thats great! This company needs to be exposed. All the dirty little secrets need to be shared so that everyone sees the company for what it really is.

@cr the severance packages aren't garbage. They don't have to give you a dime more than your 2 weeks. You may not like it but it's the truth.

@cr ding ding! At the end of the day no one is going to forfeit all their unemployment and severance to get payback on their monolithic former employers. Especially when the odds are statistically high that speaking out won’t slow down layoffs.

Because for those of us who were lucky to get laid off, our lovely garbage severence agreement prevents us from doing so.

Because layoffs means “AI doing Good.” That slogan is the only reason we aren’t in a recession. Everything beyond AI spend has been horrible the last 18 months. No one wants to run a narrative that counters that.

A layoff means AI trade is working. That is all major companies care about. Our jobs mean NOTHING to them.

If this call center act is passed they will still fire you call center folks and simply contract with a US based company who subs to India or Kenya or Philippines.

@ca
There has been a reduction of 50,000 employees in last 2 years. Check the 10K filing...440,000 to 390,000.

The Keep Call Centers in America Act of 2025 is a bipartisan bill aimed at preventing the outsourcing of U.S. customer service jobs. Introduced by Senator Ruben Gallego and others, the bill targets call center offshoring by restricting federal benefits for companies that move jobs overseas and requiring public disclosure of such relocations.
Here it is: start calling .

They are paying attention. There is a bill in congress right now that if passed will protect your jobs. Of course most of the employees at UHG are kind of negative and have a doomsday attitude so instead of calling your representatives to make sure the bill passes, you all sit around and complain.

Let's also be real about the scope..Optum is massive...A few hundred or thousand layoffs is not considered a massive RIF in the media. Especially when done over the course of years

Please don’t take it the wrong way OP. Do not be so naive. No one really cares about it. You may see an article in a local paper if you get lucky. Legacy media are too busy with their political propaganda. Whatever a private company decides to do is up to them. I’m not saying it’s moral, just, or fair…it’s just the reality.

Because the media, big insurance and big pharma are owned by the same entities.
They control the narrative.

If anyone believs the job numbers they’re an id--t and/or live in a bubble. WAY more of us are unemployed than reported. I know 3 wfh mothers in my cohort alone who were laid off last spring, still searching for jobs.

Because all service companies with desk jobs are doing this. Everyone is moving to AI.
