Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Still thinking about EH's index card at the Nike Team Meeting

I want to say that I like and trust EH and think he's what we need. All of that. But comms handing him a card that says the chat was being mean was strange in a way that I think illustrates something. I remember seeing a lot of shock and surprise in the chat, but no one was expressing anything inappropriate I don't think. So them giving him a card and getting him to cry is just odd. What did that card tell him we were even saying?

I think it speaks to a sense across Nike that we can't process things or have human responses to big news. If Comms didn't want shocked emojis in the chat, they should have just sent an email. I'm not saying we're in the "we don't tolerate dissent" zone (yet), but that is the vibe Comms seems to be sending, intentionally or not. If I could tell EH/Comms one thing it would be: you can be shocked at somewhat shocking news and still believe in our mission. We've still got so much of our comeback journey left. It's going to be important for leadership not to confuse being a person with not caring about this place.

EH, the greatest culture fraud Nike has ever seen in a leader. Buddy buddy. Roaming the halls. Hugging folks. Buying coffees. Got everyone's defenses down. Then instead of exercising real leadership, let a consulting firms spreadsheet formulate chunks and chunks of layoffs.

Pathetic. Short-sighted.

So when JD went on national media and blamed remote work for the company stalling, it clearly became the beginning to his end because he "lost the lockeroom" in a single interview. I believe this ill-advised notecard/crying/dadtalk stunt will be EH's beginning to his end. This was clearly scripted including the emotions and crying. It makes me question any sort of passion and emotion he has displayed in prior meetings or will in future. When the trust is gone, so is the coach.

Nothing quite like an Oregonian to shut down and dismiss people’s feelings, especially complicated ones where a couple things could be true at the same time. Hearing this makes me cringe so hard!

I agree with you, first... it feels like they just assumed people were going to post something negative and someone from a PR or Comms or HR perspective was trying to persuade him to make a comment out of the gate. Second, The comments were mostly surprised, I didn't see anything highly negative, however I wish they would've went into why we did it. I had to talk to a friend in HR who had some knowledge of what was going on to get the back story. Once I heard it, it made complete sense to me... so why not share that with all employees? I think people would've acted less shocked.

Third, I hope this type of 'scripted' behavior is something to come with these meetings. I liked Elliott for being candid and clear, not another corporate leader that we've had. (JD and several members of the old staff).
