Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Forced Volunteering

Heads are on the line if departments do not meet their "volunteering" hours. Every other day senior leadership in my department is sending emails telling us of opportunities to "volunteer" to meet our quota. On every video conference call it is the lead in and closing point. I wonder who would lose their job if that line of business wouldn't meet the goal? Imagine being laid off because you didn't "volunteer" enough.

I like to volunteer. For the causes I care about. Not to make Verizon look good. I won't do it.

I'd love to be fired over this - would make for an interesting court case.

It ain’t volunteering when you are getting paid.

This is typical euro trash bs! Europeans rarely volunteer to do good deeds: that's the government's job! And they rarely reach into their own pockets to donate: that's the government's job!

This is why foreigners should not be in management positions, as they just don't get the American Way or the rhythm of the people! Most Americans volunteer regularly somewhere and don't brag about it.

That sick Swede misses the whole idea of a good deed. The minute you start bragging about it or trying to profit off of it then it ceases to be a good deed.

@c7 ehhh that smacks of “if they fire you for not volunteering, it wasn’t only that”

I love the “forced volunteerism”. Volunteer for an hour and do nothing the rest of the day.

Most people want to volunteer as it gives them a break from the day in and day out. There is no mandate for volunteerism nor has anyone ever been fired over not doing it.

good question
I'm still here and have never given a dollar to the Verizon PAC; though I get reminders a couple of times a month.
No thanks, I'm not paying for lobbyists
