Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Is it safe to accept a job offer from IBM?

I have two job offers that I am considering, and one is from IBM consulting services. Great company but with so many of the big firms laying off by the 10’s of thousands, it gives me pause to accept the IBM offer.

Any insights about job stability?

Thanks all - I have made my decision and am accepting the smaller firm. I have had a very positive experience in the interview process and rich discussion. The total comp is a little better than IBM (though the health care is more expensive).

Good luck to everyone still on the search!

@p3 I really appreciate all the feedback! It has indeed been helpful. I have already had a very long career having worked at several large corporations - I see the handwriting in the wall about ongoing layoffs everywhere for at least the next few years. Been there done that - looking for a collaborative culture and not interested in getting chewed up and sp-t out any longer.

@g2 thank you - I am in a very fortunate position where I actually have 2 other offers elsewhere, and am gathering insights on each company.

Thanks everyone! It really helps.

@fn thanks for the guidance - I have 25 years experience leading implementations. I have 2 other offers elsewhere that I am weighing. As you suggest, I am looking for compensating for my experience I am looking for a stable and collaborative Environment. I do not want to be placed on a hamster wheel.

@m6 why would we want to work somewhere else? According to you, your god IBM is the best place in the world to work. Besides…where else lets me stroll in at 915am, have a coffee on company time, then laugh at witless looozers like you when I walk out the door at 945am to go do 2 hours of work at home while I shop on amazon and day trade before playing a round of golf at 2pm. If it’s good enough for the Pipmunks, it’s good enough for me. IBM uses me, so I use them back. I can always count on corporate brown nosers like you to do all the work.

IBM is not your father's farm.

I want to advance my career. Why is this a bad thing? Jim and Joanne always mention upskilling and IBM has thousands of hours of courses to take,

And if you hate IBM you are free to work somewhere else.

@hx the post I wrote this morning about you, IBM India HR bot (pretending to be in the US) has conveniently disappeared. In the US, It is no longer WFH (work from home) but RTO (return to the office). It's mandatory or did you convenitenly ignore that to post your garbage? So I'll say it again - if you are in the office using your personal laptop and IBM's network to post your ridiculous lies and trashy comments on this site, you are breaking the IBM IT rules and could be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination. Did you get management permission to use your personal laptop in the office from your devout, church going first line or Kavanaugh or even Joanne Wrong ? It could mean no more IBM badges for you and "Sayonara IBM". And no executive Band 7 promotion, of course.

Sounds like you need to go into a dark place with hot hate, vile bile, spleens, vitriol and vomit for eternity. After all, what is eternity to a bot and an IBM India HR con bot at that ?

@gw You have the week off but you're still working? This tells us several things about you. 1) You're extremely young, foolish, and naive OR you're lying. 2) You're a troll. 3) You're a fool for using your own time to work for a company who hates you. Whether you think so or not is inconsequential. IBM hates you. All IBM employees are to IBM are a necessary evil. Alvind and the PIPmunks need employees to make money so they can get their $30M payouts every year while you get no cost of living increases - but hey - you'll get 500 blue points if you make it to 10 years, so yay!. Please do is all a favor, and get the fck off this website. You offer nothing of substance. Your very existence makes the world a darker place. Please pray to whatever god you worship for forgiveness - though judging by your posts, I presume your god is IBM.

@OP Just my opinion being a former IBMer, IBM always do layoffs way before Google, MS, Meta, etc started the big layoffs. Your better off going somewhere else, even a smaller company but I'd run, and run fast and far from IBM

Your IBM assigned machine is a LENOVO?
It tells me, you are a second class IBM employee.
All first class IBM employees use high end MacBook machines.
You are wasting your young age, getting IBM badges.
Better, start looking outside IBM for opportunities to shine.

I said i am home this week I am not on a VPN. I always post from my personal laptop. Why would I go on this site at an IBM location or VPN using my Lenovo?

@gv personal laptop, eh ? How are you connecting to the IBM Network from in the office when it is a clear violation of the IBM Conduct guidelines to do what you are doing (posting your comments on a non-IBM site) and on IBM company time too ? Did you get permission from your devout, church-going first line to do this ?

Or do you just conveniently ignore the rules when they don't suit you ? Maybe you can tell us what location and site you are working from ? Sounds like you should be subject to some disciplinary action up-to and including termination. Shouldn't be too hard to have IBM Networking catch you for fraud and more.

What are you talking about? IBM got rid of Databases. My first line told me there was a huge project to get rid of Lotus Notes. That was a couple of years before I joined.

Aren't you worried that IBM is tracking your time spent on this forum spewing nonsense, instead of doing real work, IBM rewards you for it.
You seem to be exhibiting some serious psychological issues. You should seek treatment immediately.
IBM would not have someone with your psychological issues in its midst.

@fz Id--t IBM HR Dehumanizing Bot

Lest you give impression by your thoughtless and uncaring comments on this board, working for IBM is not a walk in the park. Particularly in a group which is dedicated losing business and money like IBM Consulting. People who have posted their comments on this board giving the pros and cons of working in this dump of a company (IBM) have done so in good faith. Arvind is nothing but a Tamil con man - but then, Tamil con artists appear as visionaries to the id--t bots of the world.

Take your bile, hot hate, spleens, vitriol, and vomit and shove it all in a place where the sun don't shine.

The only reason to accept a job at IBM is if there is absolutely nothing else available and you need the money. If its your first job out of school, use them for some experience, but do not stay for long. IBM will use you, treat you like garbage and tell you to your face its a "good thing for you" then throw you away when they no longer need you. So as long as you go into it with the mindset of treating them the way they will treat you, you wont suffer too badly. Also, ignore the pro-IBM troll on here. They are spewing lies and they likely dont even work for IBM.

@cy they don’t give swag anymore to new hires. They give a website where you can pay to purchase it

Accept the offer. This would be your only chance to get the IBM swag. When you get the good delivered, join the other company. IBM would be happy as there would be one less person to put on PIP three months from now.

Accepting a job offer with IBM Consulting is won’t be any different than accepting a comparable job offer anywhere else in these days and times. You should deliver some kind of result or set of results within your first 90 days. Come up with some brainless productivity use case with AI for your project team. Or get in front of a client quickly to present an impactful idea, no matter how small it is. Just deliver something, anything that can be monetized because IBM is so very coin-operated. And keep taking on more and more responsibility after that and just get really really good so you can leave for a better role and company later :-)
