Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

How is quiet quitting working out for you?

A bunch of people said a while ago they were no longer giving it their all and have started quiet quitting. I'm curios, how's that working out? How did your manager react, if at all? Have you been put on a PIP or is everything still functioning as usual? This is an honest question. I'd love to do the same thing, but I'm too scared of losing my job.

@154 The pattern of putting someone in a filed out of their expertise is resukting in so much productivity loss!

I used to be a great contributor to exxon in Upstream. Several patents and innovations. Now they have stuck me in downstream and go now where projects. Of course I am retirement ready and of no use to exxon anymore. I am spiraling into nsi pip territory. So I am being forced to quiet quit no matter what. I am being obsoleted and forced out.

@yd These are all bad proxies for productivity.

Smart companies will have a dollar value associated with your output. If I add an additional $2M in value using fewer keystrokes in a shorter day than Fluffy flu--er who’s grinding for 10 hours and sounding off with platitudes in pointless meetings, I’m by definition more productive.

The real problem is that corporate bosses are lazy AF and generally clueless about how to evaluate the output of their subordinates.

@yd if they did anything with that data in EM then more people would have been run off by now

Your badge entry can be seen on when you enter office and when you leave. Also, your calendar is visible to admin. Your keystrokes can also be monitored. These are used to measure productivity in many companies.

@jd It’s a job, not a calling.

If they want me to do it, they can state it in the job description corresponding to the offer letter. That’s what they pay for, that’s what they get. It’s business.

@TREETOP it goes both ways, if the company isn’t giving its all to the employees perhaps EM should “hang it up” as an employer. Seems to be what they’re doing, clearly no longer seeing value in having employees.

If you are not giving it your all, you should really hunt another job. Not fair for peers to be carrying useless baggage, and if your immediate supervisor allows it, he should be shown the door also.

Honestly, it’s tough. A lot of folks in charge seem to criticize no matter what, if you underperform, you’re a problem; if you deliver, you’re a threat. It’s hard to tell what anyone actually wants. What’s clear, though, is that authenticity and open debate aren’t valued. When all they want is a nod squad, the only real move is to quietly step back and let them nod to each other.

Quiet quitting is encouraged by the system. Cl27, three excellent rankings on the bounce, zero real term pay rises. .

@eg that is true. Which is why I intentionally unintentionally share about other colleagues side hustles! We don’t allow moonlighting!

Perception matters… use everything and anything to stay in the safe zone!

Meantime I am fully (jokes) committed to XOM! Not!

@OP It’s working out fine.

I do what the job description says, I get paid, and I sleep well.

Try it sometime.

Yes age and pay factor into your ranking. I know some hard working oldies that are ranked N I. I also know some youngins that do nothing all day that are ranked excellent. There are also the protected class that have been quiet quitting all their careers. Exxon is the most demotivating place I have had the displeasure of working at. The friends and family, corrupt ranking system, eroding benefits, and the toxic backstabbing environment all demoralize and demotivate us the workers.

Quiet quitting = doing the job you were hired to do. It’s not sitting back and doing nothing - it’s just following the job description.

Bosses coined the term “”quiet quitting” during the pandemic because people stopped giving them free additional labor and it made their heads explode.

@c6 I also think age/RE plays a significant impact on ranking as well. I

please do not quiet quit if you still need the job and income. everyone is watching everyone now, especially bosses who are looking for efficiencies to offshore to India. I remember 10 years ago we could have half a year of relatively easy life, and half a year of busy work, and still rank well. now it's impossible for our group to find pockets of easy life, except for the ones marked for nsi.

I started last year and was nsied. I was told bec ause of my CL level more was expected of me last year. Another employee with the same CL slacked off all year and was not piped. I am going through pip now and it is iffy. I am ready and able to retire comfortably if needed. I wanted to make it to 25 years service but may not. I think if you are in a good group where no one is watching and reporting on you, you can slack off. If you are in a snake pit of a group then be careful. Some of the feedback I recieved was only known tk some of my colleagues workers.

My stress level is way down. I wasn’t planning on any raises past 50 anyway.

Working great. I can now just sit back and laugh at the stupidity on display.

It's not an open rebellion, it say quiet for a reason. Set more relax time schedule for work delivery, set less ambitious goals. Stop staying well beyond the required hours. Do what you normally do on PDS (fake it till you make it).
