Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Can some explain Union layoffs?

Sorry, I don’t belong to a union at Verizon so I don’t understand the protections that it gives you.

Are you not able to be laid off without a special package? Or are you able to be laid off but the union will do a strike if or when Verizon does?

They don’t need to lay anyone off. They can offer a retirement package, just like they did for the management people. If they break the contract they’ll just wind up paying everyone for doing nothing, which is pretty d-mb. Things work better when people try to get along.

@c8 if the company doesn’t fire contractors 1st it would be a breach of contract. They would be opening themselves to lawsuits. You really think they want that kind of publicity? Not a good look.

The bottom line, it's easier and cheaper to RIF non union employees. The company will always need boots on the ground. In my 20 years, not a single tech (in my state) has been laid off. It was a solid attempt at making us nervous, but a fail.

Btw, thanks to management for acknowledging this website, otherwise us union sc-m wouldn't have known it existed. It will provide for some really good reading material for the upcoming sla-ghter. Enjoy your remaining days! Hopefully they're spent commuting to the office!

@bv I’ve heard there is no contract? Aren’t the two sides unable to agree?

@c4 but what if Verizon doesn’t layoff the contractors first? What leverage does the Union have except to strike? And what if new CEO doesn’t care bc inflation is high, economy su-ks, and the job market su-ks? How can striking protect jobs if new CEO sees the situation as prime time to lay all persons off given that most Union workers that remain will just show up and work?

The union agreed to let the company use a certain amount of contractors, but the stipulation is that the company must fire all contractor workers before they layoff 1 union employee. The contractors are cheaper labor and save the company a sh!t ton of money. So I doubt the company would even consider a union layoff.

If you are union you don't get laid off. But you don't work or contribute anything either. So you are basically just dead weight.
