Hours in Office - How many before it counts?

How long does one need to be in the office for it to count as a “day in office”?

I’m not talking hours. I’m talking actual days. My LOB mandates 3 days per week and today is day 4 - I’m trying to get ahead.

Would me showing up at the office for 3 hours on a Friday show today as a “day in office” ?

If you’re required to be in 3 days a week and go in an extra day it will not hurt you from an hours perspective- they don’t want to penalize you for stopping in because you forgot something. It takes your 3 best days for the weekly average. 3 days a week is separate and now is reported by week, so in some departments they’re not just looking at your average days in office over a 4 week period, they’re looking week by week and the report shows yellow and red on any weeks you only went in 1 or 2 days, doesn’t matter if your average is above 3, they’ll question why on week X you were only in 2 days, even if you worked 4 the week before.

No, because as it’s been stated, the reporting that tracks days in office is separate from the reporting that tracks hours average. Presumably, if you go in less than 3 days in a given week because you have cushion built up, it will calculate the hours average based on how many days you do go in. The separate dashboard that shows the days average will still have you above 3.0, so both will be fine.

My manager explicitly said it is your best 3 days a week, on a rolling basis. Whether that is 4 weeks, 6 weeks, etc.

I’m looking at the email they sent to our entire team. The rest of you need to figure out what it is for your team or shut the fu-k up and stop spreading misinformation just because you are miserable and got fired.

To the OP...you need to stay in the office for 8hrs. That's FIRST badge in to LAST badge out. You can take a 3 hr lunch outside the office as the report only looks for your last badge out of the day.

Also, yes if you go in a fourth day for less than 8hrs you are penalized as that lowers the average hours in office for that week.

@ad actually that is not true. The hours in office report only shows average over prior 4 weeks, and any day in office is included. Managers can’t see the hours of individual/specific days.

PTO and travel are counted as 8 hour days. Any day in office registers as the number of hours you were there. There is false info further down on this thread that says if you go more than 3 days only 3 days are used in the average… not true.

It’s kind of weird people don’t know how an average works. You sum your hours over the days then divide by the count of days. It’s really pretty simple. That’s how it’s calculated.

My manager confirmed with upper management and by reviewing the actual report result that it takes the average of the 3 longest days for a given week, extra days don’t count towards it so if they are shorter they will not hurt. He’s fairly transparent so I trust him on this. Although I have no clue if the report in question is enterprise-wide or just one used by our LOB.

Right- at least I know what the Form 1040 calculations ARE. There are directions and a help line to call with questions. The in-office reporting is just a complete guessing game, even when one is trying to follow the rules. Life happens and we don’t know the calculations to adjust to life and still follow the rules cause we don’t really know what the rules are. Case in point with this post - does the hours report take 27 hours divided by 4, or does it count the 3 days with 8 plus hours each so the 4th ‘non-required’ day with only 3 hours does not hurt you?

@aa you actually hurt yourself as the hours tracking takes an average of the week. If you can't make it at least 6 hours, you're better off not going in and plan on a different day. You could go in 5 days a week for 4 hours each and the report would raise a flag.

You need what happened to me. My laptop glitched and somehow stayed on network while I was wfh. I saw how long I was connected and it was 26 hours!!!

Going in a 4th day for 3 hours will dilute you other 3 days. 27 hours divided by 4 days. You will be looked at as averaging 6.75 hours this week

As I understand it, yes. The reason I know is because of an instance where I had already gone in 3 days, and needed to stop by the office a 4th day to grab an item I’d left on accident, but couldn’t stay that whole day. I asked my manager and he looked into it and said that would not hurt my average. However, I was not treating that 4th day in office as a true in office day, and still went in the next week. I don’t know how a fourth shorter day would impact the hours average if you only went in two days the following week.

So today is day 4 in office, no question about it and it shows on the report?

But since I left the office today after 3 hours, it’s almost irrelevant since my prior 3 days this week were more than 8 hours, right?

We were told the reporting that tracks days is separate from the reporting that tracks hours. Any amount of time in office counts as a “day” for the former, but going in for a short period of time will hurt your average for the latter, unless you’ve already gone in 3 days in a given week. If you go in 4 days, they take the average of the 3 longest days.

But your average hours per day will go down. Shouldn’t matter if your actual 3 days are 8+ hours though.

Looks like they are taking 4 week averages based on the screenshot that was sent out by leadership

I personally do 4 then 2 - it counts. People have said it doesn’t sound but that’s BS. I’ve done 5 and 1 before also

Just to eliminate confusion on the OP, the real question is:

How long do I need to stay in the office for it to count as a day in office? Is it a full 8 hours? 4? 2?
