Thread regarding Optum layoffs

I have a heart burn - with this offshore thing.. /

I am from India, but went through the University -> H-1B -> Citizenship route a while ago in Tech space. At that time, there was no fraud or offshoring, and very few select people got an H1B. I really appreciated the opportunity provided to me.

Now I am seeing all these young kids from the US are being short-changed with offshoring. Any US layoff or attrition is being filled offshore. That mandate is coming way, way above. If you don't provide opportunities for young kids, what will happen to the next generation? This is 100% wrong. I want to take someone fresh out of school and mentor them with what I've learned - but all goes offshore. Almost like seeing Manufacturing going offshore in the 80's and 90s.

I am not sure why nothing is being done... I feel like people here are more subservient and submissive than in other countries. (sorry)

It's true, we already have to meet at the start of our US shifts to have the Indians join us. And of course they barely have internet bandwidth for a Teams call. We are in good hands...ugh.

Sad truth is there is nothing you can do. When a government official wants to promote their reelection campaign maybe they’ll make a fuss but let’s be honest, they are paid off by companies like UHG so they look the other way. The only thing you can do personally is find a new better company to work for and root for this one to implode. If you ever have an HR role, advocate for using other companies insurance. Otherwise, not much else you can personally do.

Honest question...what could be done to stop it? What should we be doing? Go to the press is the only thing that comes to mind.

@c2 that's old news. Latest is 80-20 atleast. Some teams are already all India based developers and director. Just the VP is in US. This is especially true for data engineering from what I noticed.

@bf 100% true. I need a developer urgently and they said I can only hire in offshore. The offshore dir has sent me 3 resumes in 3 weeks and none of them even match the job description! while there are supremely qualified people in the US are jobless and will do a much better quality job. Sad. This company is imploding into itself.

Worst kept secret is that Optum requires teams to have 70% off shore staff.

That pay them 1/5 what they pay US employees.

@b1 it's not fake. I'm the OP. I'm have hiring authority but was told hiring in US is not an option from 4 leves above me. It's no longer best candidate but best from outside of US.

@a8 I agree I dont know why nothing is being done about this. Its wrong and thank you for acknowledging. I do believe that something will be done about it one day but its a slow process. I think company's that offshore should pay a huge tax this way they will think twice about it. I dont blame the people that are offshore taking advantage of the opportunity its good for them. Its not good for us, the economy or the consumers.

Because Americans are stupid and greedy. I know someone who works with UHC contracted and all they do is outsouce jobs for this company. This year alone they have outsourced 40000 jobs. This person stated, I wonder when these employees in the states will wake up.

The sad part is that those pushing for Offshore are either US execs or Indian execs who got their first break availing US-based opportunities, now sc--wing US kids.
