Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Contemplating to stay vs taking another offer

I am considering an offer from a global company where I will mostly be managing/co-developing a team of developers building a product. The downside is I might be the only one on-site in the city and rest are spread across the world. RTO is 2 days a week 40 miles away.

I have a pretty good standing at T but just afraid of all these lay offs and relocations to god knows where. What do you guys think makes sense to do here?

“ I'm important here and I'm a significant contributor“

No ,you’re not.

And no one cares about you or what you contribute.

Unfathomable that you don’t understand that.

Honest feedback here:
ATT is the devil you know, it is a shell of what it was even 5 years ago and the direction is looking worse for the next 5 years. This is not a good place to stay. But, you know what to expect here. There is some glimmer of normalcy in that.

There are plenty of companies out there that are far worse than here. I know that’s shocking to most on here, but it is true. There are far worse places, I’ve been there done that. When interviewing, you need to look for the red flags and ask questions. Things to look for - short tenure is usually a dead giveaway to a very toxic place to work or extremely high burnout, people don’t stay. Ask people interviewing you how long they’ve been there - if most say 1-2 years and it’s not a new team, red flag. Ask about expected hours and timezones, ask them how they like working there. They will always say something like it’s fine or good - good places to work, they will say I love it here or be enthusiastic. Read between the lines on that, watch their body language and tone of the response. If your goal is to grow, ask about career development and training, opportunities to grow, etc. if they are always bringing in outside talent into leadership roles, not a long term place to be. Check LinkedIn profiles of people that work there, that’s another metric, always looking at tenure.

Hope all that helps and good luck.

@c2

Bro...absolutely no one is important at AT&T.

Everyone is replaceable. Even the CEO. The network will still run.

Other companies actually respect their employees and offer job security.

But, I get it. AT&T pays more than most in telecom.

It's worth it to retrain, reskill and update your resume to other industries. I left; just check in on the chatter cause I've got a large chunk in 401k.

I used to have pride and think I'm an AT&T man. No, dude. Its a joke.

I had another offer but I'm staying. I'm important here and I'm a significant contributor. And the money is good.

Everyone I know who has left is happier. This place is a sinking ship on all levels.

Life at T is not going to get any better in the foreseeable future. In fact, there’s a good chance it’s going to get worse as more and more people leave, dumping more and more work on those left. Stinky said he has absolutely no loyalty to you. Good team or not, he’s going to whack you when it’s best for him. Take the money and run!! Never look back!

RTO is 2 days a week 40 miles away

I commute 30 miles one way five times a week. I would take two days and 40 miles in a heartbeat.

Why even contemplate?

Life outside of T is better.

Break hold of the Stockholm Syndrome.

Inquire more about your team. Location and hours (do they work US hours or not?), years of experience in their positions, etc. If they sound like temps, then it's not a great team to manage. I managed an offshore team that did not work past 12 PM ET. Afternoons and evenings were scary. You will be the single point of contact during US hours....

What is the reason for loyalty to T ? I'm just asking, not being silly. Are the conditions/stress/professional development opportunities better at the new company? They made an offer to you, which signifies they are interested in you. How do you feel at T ? The odds are at some point with T you will be required to relocate to TX and/or be laid-off at some point. The past many years it doesn't seem anyone's position is "safe". So that's something you have to decide. The people I have known that left T and continued working - not straight into retirement, seem to be happier in their new company.
