Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Badge Swipes Monitoring

I’ve been hearing that by the end of the year, they plan to stop centrally monitoring badge swipes altogether.

Instead the responsibility will shift to individual mgrs and orgs, who will have the discretion to decide what kind of in-office expectations they want to set for their own teams.

@ps I have some bad news for you... Unless you are a VP or higher, EVERY SINGLE PERSON at Dell is very easily replaceable, fireable and/or qualifies for layoffs lol. Doesn't matter if you are a top performer, have been there for 6 months or 25 years. Doesn't matter if you make 60k or 160k.

Those going into the office go in because their org's execs monitor it and how much they care, is anyone's guess. My org for example expects a 30% "badge in" per quarter. Which is basically 3 days/week. They dgaf how long we stay or IF we just "coffee badge" or not but, they have to report up to their boss and don't want to have to answer as to why this person(s) are only bading in x amount of times/week.

Basically, people going into the office go in because you know, a job is a job and idk... I personally prefer to be able to have money to keep my home?

YOU ARE REPLACEABLE.

The people not going in are people who keep Dell ticking and on track. They are important people that you can't get rid of. Only the shleps go in everyday as they are bottom feeders who don't offer that much value. If they're gone then you wouldn't really notice. That's why they badge in every day because they know they're totally replaceable.

If anything they are going to start having us scan our badges to get out of the building to curb the coffee badging.

@c1 I have a good friend who HAS to be in office every day and he has my badge. I pay him $10/per swipe to make it seem as if I'm going in lol. So basically, when he goes in, he swipes his badge, then mine. He get's $100/week, which is basically covering his gas costs + more. It's a win/win situation lmfao

@bk idk about that as I know more in office people who have been let go versus remote... Think about it this way... If you were unfortunate enough to be deemed "onsite" then you were REQUIRED by "policy" to be IN office 5 days/week (or at least badge in) and those who were failing to meet this policy, were being flagged to upper mgt.

Basically, "onsite" employees have a HUGE flag on their back if they aren't abiding by this policy now, whereas remote employees are doing what they've always done. Work. Their only policy is to... do their job.

So, when lalyoffs are on the table, they are going to look at those who are supposed to be "onsite" first. Look at those who are not abiding by the policy - not coming in and/or not coming in enough - and THOSE will be the first to go far before remote will be looked at.

Why can't AI swipe my badge for me?

When they have whittled employee numbers down to 50k or whatever magic figure Bane consulting has decreed, then they will stop monitoring you. Until then they will use noncompliance as a reason to fire you for cause; thereby saving on severance packages.

@bk - Oh, I see — visionary insights straight from the crystal ball. Meanwhile, in reality: remote folks aren’t getting axed, nothing will be done about Tell Dell, eNPS, or even RTO. But hey, keep the prophecies coming — entertaining stuff.

Not going to happen. I'm hearing the opposite and targeting remote eng next. RTO is hear to stay unfortunately.

@aq I mean yeah but, at the end of the day... every company regardless of size does "own" you. We work for them for a paycheck and that's it. EVERY SINGLE person in any industry or company is absolutely replaceable so, why would a company give two poops about someone?

@a5 Yes but that's not what OP means. Badge swipes have always been monitored but until recently, you (SPECIFICALLY) and your manager/directors can actually SEE IT. Before last year when they did the whole hybrid thing, I don't believe anybody could see badge swipes except for maybe VP's and HR.

I also have heard this too, actually. Will it actually happen? Who knows... But, what I do think will happen is they will scale back the 5 days/RTO to 3 - like it's ALWAYS been. Pre-covid it was always 3 days in, 2 at home. covid forced the full remote and now covid is over (yes, it is fkng OVER with you goofs) and many other companies have mandated a 5 day IN office rule so, Dell followed suit.

Well, we all know how the precious Tell Dell results turned out and if there's one thing dell cares about, its their nPS score - which again, as we know was in the sewer with the rats.

I do think that by EOY dell will let managers/directors decide if their directs need to be in office x amount of days, or not. I mean, dell wouldn't want to destroy and tarnish their reputation by being known as the company who monitors your every move. They thrive off of telling everyone they are all about "flexibility" and "work/life balance."

Losing employees or future employees to competitors who have a hybrid model would be disastrous.

So yes, I honestly believe that the ACTIVE monitoring will be gone sooner than later and will be left up to each individual manager/director.

Working at Dell often raises the question: do you own your job, or does Dell own you? From what I see, it’s the latter.

If they do away with central monitoring and punishing those who aren’t in every day they will never admit they were wrong. They don’t do that.

It's already being monitored. You can see it in internal systems. Managers can see it.

You can keep dreaming this. It's not going to happen. Things get worse at dell, not better.
