Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Layoffs kick off the week of 4/27?

Is that certain or just a rumor? Because sitting around for weeks not knowing will drive everyone insane.

@s7 Lol yes, it’s a stick. And insurance so cheap it basically pays ME every time I drive it

@qp I love how you can tell when an argument is won, when one side can only respond with name calling.

@s3 exactly. Love the old Corolla. Especially with a stick. You’re probably 40+ mpg, no payment, ridiculously low insurance, and maintenance costs less than an amortized warranty on a new car.

I really don’t understand people taking out a sizable loan on a new (or relatively new) car with a large payment, outsized insurance, for something that gets questionable mileage… to commute from the east side.

I mean… I don’t like that gas prices have gone up recently. But I’ve made sound choices when it comes to commuting… to the degree that when it goes up I’m not whining on an anonymous message board about the expense of driving to work.

I guess a few of us were raised different… and believe we’re responsible for our decisions.

@mm Don’t sleep on the Corolla. I’m a tech 45 with a 21 year old manual Corolla. My money is in the bank, not in my car. If gas were $10/gallon I can still afford to fill up heh heh

@k4 HR is starting to require lower VP's to do quarterly team check-ins, and the check-in dates for Q3 lined up with the RIF announcement in a really funny way. The rest of the time spent on those meetings were to document deliverables, cherrypick "wins", etc. to prove that the VP is doing his job and leading a successful org, which is why there was so much awkward faux-positivity, lmao. We'll see another one right after the Q4 reorg and it will be just as cringe

@me you obviously cannot.

The question is whether or not the people currently complaining about high gas prices were also celebrating when they were low.

Gas prices are going to fluctuate. Those living paycheck to paycheck when prices are low… are going to have a hard time when they adjust. And that is a problem of their own creation. Your average expense for gas under Trump is still less than what it was during Biden. Is it more today? Sure. Are you capable of understanding averages, maybe?

Not seeing a lot of fuel efficient cars in the garages. A lot of bigger SUV’s that most certainly have a monthly payment on it.

Don’t complain about gas prices if you:

  • Drive a large suv or pickup
  • Have bought something new enough it requires a monthly payment
  • Chose a long commute
  • Didn’t save money when gas prices were low
  • Don’t understand how inflation adjustment works

I don’t have an EV. But for goodness sake, you can charge for free on campus. If you can’t make a full EV work… plugin hybrid? Or… a 15 year old Corolla?

I get that someone may have an issue with high gas prices because of driving you want to do on the weekends. However, this issue was brought up in relation to how awful it is that you have to drive in to work with gas prices being high.

Further, I get what high gas prices are going to do with the supply chain and subsequent shipping surcharges. Again, the issue discussed thus far was about personal expenditure as it relates to driving to work.

Live within your means. And account for goods and services that have fluctuating prices… to fluctuate.

Who among you intentionally chose a relatively fuel efficient vehicle (or EV) with a short commute, that understands inflation, elected to save some money when prices were low… that still feels that they cannot afford to drive to work four days a week?

National Average Gas Prices
• Brazil — $3.94/gal
• Canada — $3.98/gal
United States — $4.12/gal
• United Kingdom — $4.18/gal
• Colombia — $4.24/gal
• Argentina — $4.92/gal
• Mexico — $5.53/gal
• Spain — $6.93/gal
• EU Average — $7.34/gal
• Germany — $7.75/gal
• Italy — $7.87/gal
• Australia — $7.87/gal
• France — $8.00/gal
• Netherlands — $9.45/gal
• New Zealand — $11.80/gal

@cn

Explain how to buy gas at the "Trump to date is an average (also inflation adjusted)" price of $3.20.

The average gas price in Beaverton today is $4.39. That's reality, not the lib media.

@k4 they were abdicating responsibility.

It was their way of saying they are as helpless as you are, and don’t know anything. And don’t have the ability to influence anything.

They are disconnected from the Nike business, and are not trusted leaders at Nike. And thus, are in the dark. As much as you.

@h7 yeah what was up with the last-min team meetings right after the vague GT all-hands just to hear VPs said no they can't answer and don't know about the timeline?

@gp they said it upfront and clear in the last GT all hands in late Feb. There is a reorg planned to finish before the end of Q4 and that "sometimes change means saying goodbye". The day after, many teams had all hands and Q&A sessions that boiled down to "yes, there is a reorg, no, we haven't finalized details," now over a month later we're still waiting for either an all clear or a WFH email

Anyone working at Nike would be smart to prime the pumps now with their network and resume. Look around while you are still pulling a paycheck, the job market is very competitive, you will find something else but be prepared for 6+ months looking & being ghosted by employers with 1,000 + applicants per open role. The company is bloated and in a death spiral, it's not cool anymore, nobody under 30 is buying the brand. Go somewhere else where your not constantly in fear of the 1x1 with your manager, then they bring on the HR rep and you know you are toast.

Not to state the obvious … but if this layoff is causing you extreme mental distress you should be actively looking for a role at a different company . Nike is the worst at this, why do you think we are the number one company in terms of usage on The Layoff??? Annual layoffs are now the norm at Nike now, and in tech god only knows with AI and ITC impacts. But if you can put up with the uncertainty, the pay is good and the swoosh looks good on the resume.

The rumors of weekly layoffs have been going on since December. I guess people like to live on the edge and in constant stress. My God, just stop. No one believes you anymore. It's like the "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" story. One day, no one will believe the layoffs rumors, and I bet that is when it's going to happen.

@eh
sigh, there is no such thing as a fact
there are only human accounts of things
you trust that account based on the integrity of the human saying it

the only thing that can come close to a 'fact' is a behavior that is reproducible
if i drop a ball and you drop a ball we both see the same thing

Awful lot of hate here. I hope all of you economics majors have a six month+ savings built up. Truly. If it’s like Oracle, could be on the outside looking in for a while.
If you want a thread on gas prices, start one. Bring your vibes and aura, because facts are irrelevant today.

@cn these libs ignore your really great point. I bought gas in Beaverton today, told the attendent, $100 regular but at the inflation adjusted rate, not the sticker price and it worked!

This is the 3rd or 4th time someone mentioned gas prices. Bike, max, or rideshare. Stop complaining, and get help.

FWIW, the average inflation adjusted gas price under Biden was $3.93. Trump to date is an average (also inflation adjusted) of $3.20.

Is gas expensive? Sure. But it is averaging less over the last year plus than the preceding four years.

The difference is lib media brainwashing you to think it’s something to be furious about.

I heard from a trusted source that has a seat at the table in these conversations that they are not this week, and when asked if they were at the end of the month they were silent and said they couldn’t disclose exact dates. Makes me think it’s the end of the month, but who knows. Probably happen in a couple of waves

On these boards it's been "Last week of the month" every month for the last 3 months. Lol.

But, I think it will have to happen by the end of this month. Next FY starts in June and they still need to do actual work planning in May.

As for size, no way it's more than 500. Even cutting a few of DE/PE types will net millions. It's way easier to find cost savings via layoff in tech than distribution, so we will surely lose less headcount than them.

the sitting around and waiting is tough, sending out resumes would be the right move, doing what you can in case that email comes in

question is, if not this year, then what about the next year and year after, it gets harder and harder as more years go by

All the CFE dates got pushed up last week and point towards the 27th being the week of cuts. Hard to get a sense of scope and scale of cuts within GT - seems this was meant to happen much earlier but MD's departure and the subsequent LT jockeying threw things off.

I still think they were delayed to add more names. Wall Street hates us, there's a war for oil, and Nike's withdrawn guidance. I sense a massacre.
