As a mid 30s product lead I am tired of watching the same lifers get promoted while teams drown. If the company wants to move forward they should stop protecting folks who add nothing and hire people who actually know modern tools and care about outcomes.

I see groups being cut where there is a mix of old and young being let go. But, on an individual basis, the older people are being cut with package offers. Some like it and some definitely do not like it. We'll never know the magic formula.
@ky This is also true if you want a meaningful raise. I took a lower position at another company for a year and got a $10k/year raise. After the year I applied for the same role I had at Dell before I left and got another $4k to come back to the dark side. Honestly Dell expects less from me so its a win win.
My experience (over 40 years in the industry) is that if you are seeking promotion then you need to move to another company. That is how I rose to the rank of a Director in another company and then decided to take a IC position at Dell to finish out my career.
So stop moaning about Older Employees getting promoted ahead of you and get off your butt and move to another company for that promotion.
Same thing at Dell, I have seen people doing the same job for 30 years LOL.

Be grateful you are a product lead. Also scale back your ambitions, Dell does not promote people, and when they do, it's not who you are but who you know most of the team. There are a few exceptions to the rule, but i would say most of the decisions are not based on pure meritocracy.
Coming from the EMC side it's the lifers that aren't getting promoted, and we are often disproportionately affected by layoffs while under qualified Kool aid guzzlers from the Dell side are promoted to "lead" our teams.
Ironically though, it's usually the lifers who are targeted for layoffs more often than not...
let me tell you about the old day and how good they were...
Yes. Dell-lifers are insufferable. I secretly rolled my eyes whenever they yammer about the old days. They are the epitome of low ambition.
The lifers are compliant and that's all that matters.
